The Force That Through The Green Fuse Drives The Flower
by Dylan Thomas

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.
And I am dumb to tell the crooked rose
My youth is bent by the same wintry fever.

The force that drives the water through the rocks
Drives my red blood; that dries the mouthing streams
Turns mine to wax.
And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins
How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks.

The hand that whirls the water in the pool
Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind
Hauls my shroud sail.
And I am dumb to tell the hanging man
How of my clay is made the hangman's lime.

The lips of time leech to the fountain head;
Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood
Shall calm her sores.
And I am dumb to tell a weather's wind
How time has ticked a heaven round the stars.

And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb
How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.

Does anyone who reads this even use OS X? Ah well. Maybe these bits will still be useful for people Googling later. Anyway, Safari now has tabbed browsing, so I've been using it all morning, and there's one especially nice feature: spell checking for HTML forms. That means I can spellcheck blog entries before posting them. Which just rocks. _

A beautiful, beautiful hack to use OS X's built in Mail application and Pine on the same machine. I've been looking for almost exactly this program, and had started to think I'd have to do it myself. If I had, I wouldn't have done it half so well. This means that, when I get my email moved over to the Mac, I'll be able to use Apple's very nice GUI mailreader when I'm at home, but I'll still be able to ssh in and use a text-based mail client (I prefer Mutt to Pine, but the hack will work for either) when I'm away. I don't know if I can express how winning this is. I'd been fussing over it in the back of my mind for the past two or three weeks, at least, so this saves me a lot of trouble.

Haven't we been here before? Indeed we have. Woman as sharer and carer, woman as earth mother, woman as guardian of all the small rituals that knit together a family and a community, woman as beneath, above or beyond such manly concerns as law, reason, abstract ideas--these images are as old as time. Open defenders of male supremacy have always used them to declare women flatly inferior to men; covert ones use them to place women on a pedestal as too good for this naughty world.

I was just reminded that I've been meaning to link to this excellent article by Katha Pollitt, from an old issue of The Nation, explaining just what's wrong with the idea that women are somehow more naturally inclined towards peace than men. I could say more, but I wouldn't say it as well--just go read the article.

For text formatting, I think Textile strikes a very nice balance between raw HTML and the extreme simplicity of Wiki. In some ways, Textile is even simpler to deal with. Also like that it doesn't prevent real HTML. I'd like to see a templating system that's this close to being the Right Thing. _

A blog templating system has two substantially different uses: it has to be possible for someone who knows HTML to completely redesign the look of the page, but it should also be possible for the blog's author to do a certain amount of customization even without knowing any HTML. _

"As soon as we started programming, we found to our surprise that it wasn't as easy to get programs right as we had thought. Debugging had to be discovered. I can remember the exact instant when I realized that a large part of my life from then on was going to be spent in finding mistakes in my own programs."
