Looking for something else, I stumbled across this wish list for a weblog tool. One item particularly caught my interest: "The system should have the notion of an administrator, which manages the permissions of users. The administrator should not be an user."

The possibility of an administrator being something other than just a user with more privileges had never occurred to me. If I made Wobble work like that, it would simplify a number of programming and user interface questions that I'd been thinking about. _

So yesterday afternoon I found myself off work early and in Marin, so I drove across the bridge to Berkeley to browse around bookstores. I was hoping to find the perfectly luscious edition of Jebb's Antigone text, translation, and commentary that they have in the SJC library, but had no luck. Almost got a nice Oxford text of Sappho and... Alcaeus? I have the feeling I'm misremembering the name of the other poet there. Ah well. At Black Oak Books. But then I opened it up and saw that it was $135, and ever so gingerly put it back on the shelf. But then later in the evening, I was at Cody's, and walking through the science fiction section I saw some things that led me to the following series of thoughts:
"Oh, neat, William Gibson's new book is out!"
"Oh, and he's going to be reading here on Thursday... I should go."
"Oh... and... uh... today is Thursday!"

And so, I stuck around for the reading. Got a seat in the second row. He's got a wonderful voice, sort of an amused ironic drawl, and, as I've been learning from reading his blog, he may actually be as interesting as his books make him appear. His new book is called Pattern Recognition, and takes place in the recent past--which is to say, probably about the same period as his other books. It seems to be following up on some of the themes that interested me most in the last three books; Cayce is sensitive in some of the same ways Laney was. Also, Cayce wears nondescript clothing with all the branding carefully removed, which makes me happy, because it's something I dream of doing.

Oh, but here is something that fills me with envy: Sumana (who works at Cody's) actually got to introduce him! And he even mentioned her on his blog! He's right, she was very funny. And she's right about what her best line was. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to say hi to her... she was busy introducing at first, and I didn't notice her around afterwards.

Also, earlier in the evening, I ran into Devin, an old friend (though I didn't really know him all that well) from the BBSing community around here, when there still was such a thing. Only talked to him for a few minutes, but still, it was nice to see him. It'd been years.

(And a moderately neat coincidence: this morning at work, Dave was showing me a program he'd made to feed fake e-mail addresses to spambots, which idea Devin implemented beautifully some time back in the form of Sugarplum.) _

Keith Devens's weblog regularly makes me furious, but I can forgive a great deal from a Buffy fan with a pet CMS programming project. (As for the furiosity, it's really not the political disagreement that bothers me, it's the contempt.)
