The Evil Chandelier with the leaves and the berries has been defeated! With the help of a hacksaw and stained glass, it could possibly have something made of it, but I think it really is just too thorough-goingly ugly, both in whole and in parts.

Megan McArdle digs up a few bankruptcy filings that Edmund Andrews didn't mention in that, um, compelling article about his personal financial crisis and associated book tour, which makes the picture even less sympathetic.

At this point, presidential speeches and press conferences are my favorite program. I resent them scheduling them on daytime TV. It is safe to say that this has never been the case before.

This was the hiding place he settled on the first few days in the house. It's a gap by the bathroom sink, perhaps 3 inches wide. His anxiety only reappears now when I open the trapdoor to the attic _respond? (1)

Breaking news: the speaker of the house is a political hack of questionable sincerity who follows the party line. I mean, that's just the job description. Over any length of time, following the party line will make you a hypocrite. Yet suddenly whether Pelosi knew about waterboarding in september 2002 or not until 2003 is a huge issue? It wasn't even clear if this was a winning issue for the democrats until the 2008 election: they actually ran away from it in 2004. Expectations that Pelosi would have publicly objected to waterboarding before the Abu Graib photos are either daft or strategic indignation.

Off to be tested for recreational drugs. There are good things about working for the federal government, however indirectly, but it does mean being rather more exposed to the winds of inanity blowing off our democratically elected legislatures.

With the new house has come a rearranging of items, which has lead to me picking up the piano again, since the lovely keyboard is now easier to get to. I will never be musical, but I do enjoy the somewhat mechanical conversion of sheet music into music: it is as close a simulation of actually being musical that I will ever achieve, a couple steps closer than Guitar Hero type games. The trouble is, the sort of stuff I want to play is hard. There's a reason they tuck the Debussy in the back of the book. So I've settled for trying to claw back the C.P.E. Bach Solfeggietto in C minor (the perfect song for the pianist with the soul of a typist), the high tide mark of my piano skills, from the recesses of my nervous system, and picking my way through a rather cloying thing from the beginning of the book. But I haven't even really touched a keyboard with any sort of intent since the dawn of the internet, so if anyone knows of any good online libraries of easy piano sheet music, I would be grateful.
It's completely bizarre, though, how I have these things filed away. I can still pretty much just rattle off the first page of the Solfeggietto, which was the last recital piece I ever played, before my teacher fired me for lack of interest (for which I remain grateful). And I keep finding songs I probably haven't played for 15 years in my fingers. I seem to have reached an age where I'm going back to things I enjoyed but had no talent for.

I have seen the international space station fly over! It moves! It understands conic sections! It looked like it was over Boston, but in fact it was over the Atlantic, 311 miles away, 220 miles up.
