There is a Licking County in Ohio, complete with a Licking Memorial Hospital and a Licking County Sheriff, doubtless alongside many other hilarities.

Astonomy puzzle: Why is a sliver moon nearly always pictured opening upwards? Could you use the tilt of the moon to determine latitude?

Was introduced to The Dog Who Eats Recumbant Bicycles. Very nice dog. Current theory is that the internal gearing makes a noise that she doesn't like.

I'm sick of cotton. I want some decent looking trousers that aren't cotton, so I can cycle to work in the rain without being cold and wet all day. Why is this so difficult? I do have a linen pair, but they're getting ratty. Nylon pants would be wonderful, but they've all got stupid zip-off knees and look-at-me-I'm-hiking pockets. Why do we all wear jeans? They're hot, they're stiff, and they turn into pure misery when wet. Wool would be fine, if it weren't for the washing thing. Stupid cotton-centric society.

Just had a Chicken Mole Burrito for the very first time. I now want to know all about non-confectionary uses of chocolate.

The Dog That Wants To Eat Recumbent Bicycles shows no interest in me at all when I am on foot, or in other cyclists.

This evening stayed out well past dusk in the kayak. Herded geese by moonlight. Maybe I'll go back to sheepdog someday. Cut back on the number of animals dramatically, and make them more interesting, more complex. Its exhausting, trying to keep 10 geese going the same direction. At one point ended up splitting three off in order to keep the rest going, and had to loop back after them. You have to keep your distance; if you get too close they split and all go perpendicular, and by the time you've rounded them together they're going entirely the wrong direction.
The swans made it clear that they were Not To Be Herded. Met a small duck, which looked much like a mallard, and quacked like a mallard, but dove when worried. Perhaps our fall Fancy Ducks are beginning to arrive. After a handful of dives it realized that quacking upon emergence wasn't strictly necessary, so I lost track of it. Only saw two nighthawks tonight, saw more yesterday from land. Also found what may be a good picture of my favorite tree, will take the camera out tomorrow or saturday at the same time if it's clear.

Fully inflated bicycle tires make an immense difference. How long do they stay inflated? Less than a month, it seems.

The Magnetic Fields back catalog is now available from iTunes. You no longer have any excuse for not having 100,000 Fireflies or Deep Sea Diving Suit.

I've never actually needed a belt before. I suppose I've never shrunk before.

There's a brand new fire hydrant down the road. Still has its instruction label attached.

I'm getting a new office! It's half a big window office, without any cubicle walls or anything, nice open, with a quietish part-time person. It was being held in reserve by another department on the off-chance they hired someone, while I mouldered in by back 3rd of a storage closet.
