Went to IKEA. Upgraded house. Plastic file boxes have been replaced with file cabinet; Laundry baskets replaced with wicker hamper, added a comfy chair to the bedroom, got a folding table for the porch, and have a beautiful new real-wood bookshelf for the spare bedroom that still wants putting together. Next on the enemies list: cd racks, tape drawers, computer desk, shortage of wall hangings. After seeing the Lord of the Rings exhibit, I've been thinking that we could use some heraldic pennant type things; Gondor would be ideal. Disorienting, that exhibit. It all felt very authentic; it was all the real thing; the actual props, and all felt very authentic, so I see the shield and spear of Gil-Galad, and think that's the real thing, which is a disorienting thought, to put it mildly. Along with the pennant, I want a pair of elvish boots for winter, and wouldn't object at all to some prints of the sketches and paintings they had on the walls. They set their sights far too low mechandising those films. A gollum mask, indeed.

Humility, the knowledge that you are often mistaken, needs to be accompanied with a strong desire to know when and why you are mistaken, or it turns into an ugly kind of indifference and submissiveness.

In my continuing effort not to be excessively miserly, picked up a nice Cathedral set. Haven't played Cathedral since MC moved, whenever that was.

I made an exception for these. In general, I feel clouds lose all their appeal when pinned down and made small. Fictional clouds are particularly bothersome. The whole point is that these things happen all by themselves.

There were about 30 in all, scattered along the shore. An improvement on the regular sunken or broken ones.

I felt resentful when I took this picture, because someone so obviously wanted me to. They put it out there a week or so ago, before the rains.

How on earth does one photograph a tree? Accursed giant chaotic unsymmetrical beasts.

Cormorants are the office clerks, the mainframe programmers of waterfowl. Perpetual embarrassment covered over with gruffness.
