This duck has some offspring now with the white throat but without the white breast.

Just spent most of two hours circumnavigating Spy Pond. Pictures to follow. Finding pictures from a kayak is easy, the trouble is taking them. By the time you see something, you're past it, have to backpaddle, and then your wake catches you, and the water is a mess for a couple minutes.

We went kayaking around the pond this morning. Rain makes the water dark green and opaque. The ducks can't fly yet, but if you worry them enough, they use their wings as paddles. Willow tree branches that end up underwater don't keep their leaves for very long. Finally, kayaking is very good for my back, with all the twisting.

"I have no * but I must *" -scream
featuring languagehat: "I have no influence yet I must whine"
Of course, it should have been I have no * and I must *" -scream which turns up a more promising bunch, such as I have no jellybeans and I must gamble.
Google accepted yet for but, kindly enough.

I no longer like Elvis Costello. This has happened without warning. Even Oliver's Army and Brilliant Mistake rub me the wrong way. I don't think it's the headphones. I think it's that he is tedious, petulent and sings through his nose.

E*TRADE has been a very good bank, and I'm irrationally fond of having my ATM fees refunded. However, never make the mistake of trying to get to customer service on the phone. The people I talked to on the phone were apparantly complete twits who made things up. However, they responded to the email form on their website within 3 hours, and straightened everything back out, including things that I had been told were impossible. I had stopped using customer service webforms, because I'd never actually got a response from one before.

This morning, the pond had a fresh layer of algae. The ducks were swimming round in circles, heads down, making quiet dabbling noises. Among them was a duck-sized wake without a duck on top of it. At one point it came close enough that you could see the carp's upper lip. I suppose it was all the fresh rain and accompanying run-off that did it, or perhaps the colder weather. Yesterday we saw several ducks chasing mayflies. One in particular was really into it. Others would try it and get bored quickly. A few days earlier a swan was eating leaves off a convenient tree, taking a drink every two leaves, and making a rasping chewing noise. Been carrying a plastic grocery bag occasionally, for picking up litter. Should start carrying a pocket knife, to cut the abandoned fishing lines. Plastic grocery bags are a marvel of modern technology. People used to work hard for waterproof containers.

Perhaps what I need is something which demands to know why I'm using the computer when I sit down, and then displays that reason at the top of the screen until I check it off, and if I've checked off all the reasons, won't let me do anything but shut down unless I give it more reasons. And saves all the reasons, and how long it took me, and gets suspicious if checking the weather forecast takes more than 10 minutes or involves Nethack. It could send me nagging mail-deamons. Even better, I could make nethack ask How long do you want to play? and then automatically save and quit when that time was up.
