The New Zealander who is in hot water for building a home-made cruise missile to raise public awareness of the problem of home made cruise missiles has a fascinating home page detailing his adventures with making jet engines in his garage. I have a thought here, about how the history and tradition of english eccentrics and explorers allows and encourages such behaviour, and how it goes back to the idea of the gentlemen scientist, and is entirely missing from american society, but I'm not sure what the thought is, precisely. Note that he uses a leaf-blower to create the initial pressure to ignite pulsejets, which work because air has momentum (yay!). Also that he appeared on the english version of Junkyard wars.
