A good warm coat is worthwhile. Being warm is far more enjoyable than simply not being unbearably cold. Now all I need is warm boots, and a pair of shoes I can leave in the cubicle. (Though cubicle is too generous, lets say strangely shaped office partitioned into 3 spaces, one of which has become an unofficial office attic) I thought I'd need a flashlight, but now that the leaves have come down and been tidily swept up into immense brown paper bags, what was a dark tunnel of a bikepath feels more like trespassing through backyards.

On Monday, we went to Cape Ann, where the only public land is an old abandoned granite quarry within a few hundred feet of the sea. Along with the quarry and the Gulf of Maine, which I can only describe as wind-lashed, with foam streaming off the waves as they broke, We saw a two magically elegant Gannets flying into the wind, one of which plunged striaght down into the water from far above, only folding its long black-tipped wings just before it vanished into the sea. There were also a dozen or so little harlequin ducks, paddling along just about where the waves broke, diving periodically as a group. Apparently they do this all winter, along rocky coasts where everything else has too much sense to be. Finally there was a flock of fluffed-up sandpipers. Next time I'll take the camera, not that it would have done any good, because the wind was coming off the ocean far too hard for my poor flimsy tripod. (I will not become a birding gearhead... I will not have a lifelist... I will not worry about what sort of sandpipers). Earlier in the day we'd seen some ridiculously cute bufflehead along a public beach, and they justified the existence of the scope and tripod, so it's all right.

From an internal e-mail, about parking of all things, this improvement on God's final words: "We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your anticipated cooperation."

Henry Blodget of stock bubble fame will be covering the Martha Stewart trial for Slate. Neat to see an outsiders view of the press pack. Plus, wow, what a name. Has self-deprecation down. (You would too if you'd recommended the stocks he did) From the conflict of interest statement:

Some people are on the pitch.
They think it's all over.
It is now. In case anyone else wondered about the sample in that New Order song. The best bit: "I'm a Japanese poet am I? I've never been called that before."

Back from Atlanta. The weather was just plain silly; not only are the leaves still on the trees, most of them are green. It was slightly warmer outside than in. Don't order sweet tea. You may think it's iced tea with sugar in, but in fact it's the other way about. Though if you mix one part sweet tea with two parts unsweetened tea, it's all right. The traffic jams, like the city itself, were orderly, polite, and endless. A city scaled for cars rather than people; where all the lanes are marked and no one ever has to parallel park.

An undeveloped thought on the Atkins diet: Perhaps part of it's appeal is that it recommends that you eat expensive foods (meat, cheese, fresh fruit) and avoid cheap food (bread, rice, pasta). This gives it a kind of intuitive appeal; expensive foods should be better than cheap foods.

It is a rare pop song that improves once you understand the lyrics.
