Sarah's Bloglet

A Conversation in the Street:

Two men are walking about three feet behind me. I am the only woman on the street. One says loudly to the other, "Damn, that girl has a nice walk."
Turning around, I say, "Hey, guys, could you please not make comments on my body? I think it's really rude."
"Well, I was just saying you have a nice walk."
"Look, if you said 'you look nice today' it wouldn't be so bad. But I don't appreciate comments about my body. And don't say it behind my back, ok?"
"Uh, ok. Merry Christmas!"

Awesome. They probably made plenty of observations to each other once I was out of earshot, but then that's their problem. _

Something that's been in the back of my head lately: Where do psychology and social/political forces intersect? Examples from all over: a relative of mine, prone to racist/sexist/homophobic speech, whose sister describes him as insecure; my irrational loathing of George W. Bush (just because I disagree with almost everything he's done as President doesn't mean I should hate the sound of his voice -- does it?); Adolf Hitler's pre-Nazi personal history. _

Cassie's post here reminded me about the coffee wars at my offfice. (From what I hear this is a pretty common minor conflict.) Here it's not about who makes the coffee, but entirely about the quality of the coffee itself. For a few weeks (until my bodd labeled one of the two pots "STRONG") people would regularly complain about the weakness of the coffee. Turns out one person made coffee with half the recommended amount of grounds. (Why he didn't just fill up his cup halfway with hot water? I don't know either.) _

Reading Invisible Man for the first time. So far the funniest bloggable bit went like this:

"You weren't being smart, were you, boy?" he said, not unkindly.
"No, sir!"
"You sure that about 'equality' was a mistake?"
"Oh, yes, sir," I said. "I was swallowing blood."

(And yes, I'm reading it for the jokes.) _

A study by the Impact Fund demonstrating pro-white/anti-black bias in temp agency hiring and job assignments. (In San Francisco, whites had a 2-1 advantage over blacks with more relevant experience. Now I know how I got that shitty temp job so fast.) I wonder why I never heard about this back in the '90s when the affirmative-action "debate" was going on. Blame it on the white-owned media. _

Does anyone else totally hate hearing their name in a song? I'd expect that I'm just prejudiced because the songs with my name seem to be expecially sucky (::cough::"storms are blowing in your eyes"::cough::) but I don't even like that one song by Low, and it's pretty good. So yeah. Julia, do you hate that Beatles song? Anne, do you hate "Ann Don't Cry"? (Is it disqualified on account of misspelling?) _

re: Mirabai's entry here.
I think infatuation with a fictional person can be more serious (in a way) than infatuation with a non-fictional person. What I mean is, even though we don't interact with them, fictional people set their full characters before us in a way that real people do not.
About two years ago I fell in love with two people in succession: one was real and one was Alyosha Karamazov. In retrospect I think my feelings for Alyosha had more to do with the content of his character than my feelings for the other guy. (Though his rosy cheeks probably didn't hurt.) _

Damian told me last night about a scene he'd observed: A couple (male-female) at a party, with a pin-up magazine in front of them. Whenever man would start to look at it, woman would try to stop him by snatching the magazine away or something lame like that. A discussion of "why pin-ups are bad" followed, with woman arguing that they were anti-feminist.

Trying to analyze this scene (lots of political, social and psychological content) reminded me of those force diagrams from high school physics (and junior lab), but with electromagnetism and nuclear forces thrown in. There is just so much going into a moment like that. It's a particularly provocative example, but I suspect that this sort of thing goes on under the surface of our interactions all the time. _

There are billboards up around town advertising the new movie version of The Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers. The sight of his face in the Cat makeup terrifies me. I shudder whenever I see it. Hanging out with my parents' (is that apostrophized correctly?) cats made me realize just how twisted my affections are. I had no idea how deeply ingrained my tendency toward unrequited love had become until my parents told me that their standoffish cat Claudette (cheesy spelling "Clawdette" optional) had been away from home a lot lately and was probably getting food from some other humans. I felt like I'd been catapulted into a Tammy Wynette song. My arms stay open late, Claudette, so you'll come home. _
