Hunter S. Thompson writes a sports column for ESPN.com, and it's pretty damn amusing. Of course, it's not all ranting about sports. As will all Thompson writing, sports, politics, pop culture, and current events are all mixed together in a magical stew that will probably gnaw your face off before saying, "Hello." For example:
"Watching the Baltimore Ravens play football is like watching scum freeze on the eyeballs of a jackass, or being stuck for six hours in an elevator with Dick Cheney on speed. The Ravens will pounce on you and gnaw you to death, which can take eight or nine days."
Gonzo.org has a couple of other assorted writings as well as scholarly essays on Thompson and his effects on society.

I love listening to my iTunes Mix List (currently close to 1700 songs) because it allows me to exerience a single track outside of any album-induced context (including a semi-thought-out mixtape context). I've never been a big fan of Cake's Prolonging the Magic. The album has some good songs, but suffers from a middle section that isn't bad so much as just sort of limp and uninspired. As a result I've mostly stuck to the beginning, which has 'Never There' 'Satan is My Motor' and 'Sheep go to Heaven'as standouts, and I had missed the excellent (and kind of scary[!]) 'Cool Blue Reason'. Thank you Mix List.

Call me a convert, Mozilla 1.0 freakin' rules! YEAH! They solved the stupidities in 0.9.7 and the tabbed browsing (not available on IE for the Mac) is a revelation. Love it love it love it. Should have downloaded it earlier. Default browser set to: Mozilla.

Epitonic seems to have a pretty good range of sample tracks that cuts across a good swath of the genre's out there, with a concentration on rock and electronic. Now that I think about it, I feel like I may have linked to this before. I don't really have the bandwidth to download a bunch of stuff, but it might be helpful to you all when I talk about an album I'm excited about. (for example, they have a track off ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of the Dead's new album (and an old one, too!)).

Liz and I are going to Montreat this weekend to see the mountains, kibbitz with her family, and 'get away from it all'. I'll also get to see some of the sights that Liz told me about when she was a councilor there a few years back. Chilly and rainy will be a nice change of pace.

Salon does a Masterpiece article on a Talking Heads album that's not Remain in Light. It's not blood boilingly bad, but it is both fannishly obsessive and vaguely broad. There is a link to a decent David Byrne interview which is quoted out of context in the article.

Liz and I saw Lilo and Stitch last night, thus nullifying the hard-assed sf geek image I had of myself. We could've gone and seen some Manly Science Fiction (which just happened to have been playing right next door, I heard the thumps to prove it), but instead we opted to see a film about a cute critter who comes to terms with the fact that his only function in life is to destroy civilizations. He does this with the help of a little girl who, with a sister, makes up a small, broken family (and the family is referred to as such throught the film, 'broken'). The movie is beautifully animated, and the soft, watercolored backgrounds bring forth the lusciousness of Hawaii. It's a gorgeous film, it's damn funny, and Stich (the aforementioned alien) can put his feet in his mouth and roll around as a ball. That's an ability all of us could use.
Oh yeah, it's probably the only film in history to portray a deep voiced social worker as anything but a mindless villain carrying out orders.
And the aliens look pretty cool as well.
And there's a chainsaw.

Uncle Bear used to be a roleplaying blog with stuff like press releases. It wasn't anything particularly brilliant, but it was a good aggregation of what was going on in the RPG market, and had some nice commentary and playtest reports thrown in for good measure.
Now it's doing the same thing, but instead of a blog on the front page, the information is posted in a forum. I hate forums. They're slow, confusing, and they don't hold conversations well (at least, none of the forums I've seen). I wonder why they gave up the blog, which was great at immediately distributing the information, for the forum, which requires you to click to the forums, click on RPG Aids/Press releases, find what you're interested in, and then click on that. It feels like a step back to four or five years ago, where that was how it was done.
At the same time, I'm a casual reader, not part of their community, and it was probably a pain in the ass to compose blogs around press releases. So I can see why they'd want to cut that out. Ah well.

I've finally gotten back into the habit of reading (well, fiction, at least), and've checked out Wonder Boys, High Fidelity, and Perdido Street Station from the library. I swear, I wasn't trying to get books based on movies I liked, but The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay wasn't at the Main Branch. Perhaps Liz will pick that and Kitchen Confidential up for me from the Science Library. Yay! An embarassment of riches, and a little bit of Mark Leyner, too.

Went and saw Scooby Doo. It was amusing, I laughed quite a bit, there's lots of not-so-subtle nods to Scooby and Shaggy's bohemian lifestyle, and Scrappy Doo gets his just desserts. I'm glad I'm not the only person who hated that runty little Frat Boy wannabe. It's definitely a future Mabel movie, and not a bad way to waste a mindless 90 minutes.
