UGA is doing a 'MTV-style' rendition of Measure for Measure. I'm sort of curious as to what kind of train wreck such a production would produce. . .

So I was walking down the street today, it was nice out. The sun was shining. I got a hot dog, and the hotdog guy said, "Oh, by the way, did you know the apocalypse is upon us?"
"No," I said.
"Well, I have proof," said he.

"Your mother is a journalist
your father is a creep.
They make it in your bedroom
when they think you're fast asleep.
The scenes they are inacting, now,
beside your little bed,
were never in your consciousness,
but always in your head.
Baby! It might sound dodgy now . . .
But it sounds great when you're dead
It sounds great when you're . . ."

Deal out jacks or better

she's a cutey with a booty
and she's almost never snooty
but listen to this warning my friend
she'll break your foolish heart in the end.
Songtimes songfight is pretty amusing. In this week's fight, 'My Sister', I strongly urge you listen to Duboce Triangle & JBB and Jon Benjamin Band, with only slightly less strong recommendations for Hoblit and Gareth Sparks. Oh, and they redid their frontpage so it no longer takes a hella-long time to load. That page used to be 100k!

I've been going to Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic (rfbd.org) for the past couple days. It's pretty neat, they're a totally volunteer organization that reads text books for folks who have trouble reading. Everything from out and out blindness to dyslexics to people who are so diabled as not to be able to hold up books. It just so happens that the Athens recording center (the headquarters of Georgia, I believe) is about a ten minute walk from my house, probably less but I walk slow.
Anyway, yesterday I went in for an orientation, and today I went in and watched a recording session. It's pretty simple, one person monitors the reader. The recordings are done on fourtrack reel-to-reel recorders, although they are going to be a totally digital place by summer. They already have a digital station and from what I can see it's very nice.
I hope to be a reader in a few weeks, as opposed to a moderator. While moderating (also known as 'directing' or most accurately 'monitoring') is important, and I won't mind doing it occasionally, I didn't sign on to sit and listen to someone else read. I'll be going back in on Thursday. I suppose I could have done it tomorrow, but the game's tonight, and I don't want to be too tired.

Just saw a thing about 'Monsters Inc.' and it struck me that neither John Goodman or Billy Crystal (the two lead voices) consider voicework 'acting.' In fact, it seemed like they were unable to do a good job until they were put in the same room and able to use each other in a more traditional situation. I would almost kill to cartoon voiceovers, and for the most part the field is inhabited almost completely by famous actors who do it for the extra cash and have no love of the medium.
Oh, and the Salon reviewer hated it because it wasn't more like a Tim Burton film. ::sigh::

Failure and misfortune are the name of the game, unless you're an over-glossed pop band with more studio trickery than an oiled midget at a photoshoot (cf. Guns N' Roses, Backstreet Boys). Great names and songs scoffed at for lack of 'musical ability'? Have I wandered into the wrong decade or are we calling for the return of the supergroup? Bring back the fifteen minute 'Sunshine of your Love,' and add a smattering of schmaltz for the kids! The music don't matter? Why was it a big deal to go electric? Lyrics ain't the only thing that the great scratchy voices of our times have, 'cause lyrics don't mean beat one without a melody and a feeling. Pretty voices are nice, but they lack personality, doubly so for pop dross, and when it comes down to it, that's what's at stake. Charlotte Church can fry in a boiling pot of oil for her classical pretentions, but stuff her in last, just make sure as many no-talent, pretty, soul-stealing, 'look ma, I can hit the right note,' led-by-the-nose, prefabricated superstars have been made into soup stock before she's dunked. Aaaaaah, pop-star bisque. Music ain't all brute skill and fancy licks.
