Howard Finster is dead. He did folk art, album covers, a really cool poster of Mickey Mouse, and many many other works. He was also from the general Athens area. A religious man, a Christian man, but one who made compelling artwork that went beyond his skills as a painter. I can't say why I find his work appealing, but here are some links:
A sort of homepage/analysis/thing on Finster.
His poorly formatted homepage.
Or search google, he's one of Georgia's most famous artists.

Man, I went to bed early last night, now I'm kind of head-achy. I didn't even get a chance to read 'My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist' by the always-entertaining Mark Leyner. I picked that up from the used bookstore yesterday, there are two downtown, but this one is the superior. It doesn't have all this new age crap and it's sort of dusty, and has high, slightly disorganized shelves of books. Plus, it's bigger than it looks. And I thinks the store is just called 'Books', which, unlike 'Queso', is an acceptable ideal for it to be.

Something just occured to me. Why have individual links pages (which seemed to be the suggestion for the 'expanded bloglet')? Why not have a sort of 'Johnny-Link' type of thing where anyone from the blogmass could post a link to discuss? Yes, yes, I've been reading too much Metatalk.

Whoo! Liz (not my Liz, but Andrew's Liz, whose last name is, I think, Sarazin, but it was Austin . . . oh hell, I'm just going to call her Lizzie like I did for three years and still do when she's not around) has an art site! I like it. Her drawings of Andrew are spot on, and I liked the bit of poetry about the plant. I'm really hoping she'll put up some of her sculpture, but this is a very promising beginning. Bravo!

I need someone to play a one-time NPC in the On the Edge game this Tuesday from 9-12 EST. If you're interested I'll run you through the basic rules, and give you the character background. I promise that you'll play an important part in the night's game, and that you won't be required to play more than this session.

Well, I can still draw. ::whew:: Anyway, I just finished the rough pencils for the first of the new Too Fat to be a Rock Stars. I redesigned one of the characters (Jerry) whose head I never cared for, and have gone for a slightly less cartoony look in the art in general. The strip is big (10 panels in four rows) and pretty dialog heavy. I just sort of enjoy writing that sort of thing to start off with. It also marks the return of the 'intro panel' that I had at the beginning of the comic, and that I missed doing. What does this mean in the long run? Well, it means that the strip will run once a week, and that each cartoon will be self contained instead of the more episodic stuff I had been doing. I'm just no good at long-term planning of plots. Perhaps if I think of a plot that has several clear and funny segments I'll do it over the course of three or four strips. It feels good to finally return to the comic. But, I've got five more to complete (rough plots for two of them) before I'll start posting again. I'd also like to mention that the Ghiradelli Hot Chocolate is really, really good. Especially when prepared with milk that's been heated over the stove.

Since I seem to be turning some folks on to it. I read Pitchfork almost exclusively for my record reviews. Now you too can listen to music where the lyrics don't matter, but the shirt size of the singer does!

I've been wrestling with Mike's passing comment for a day now (look at the comments to see where I'm coming from). The Pixies are truly the legacy of the Beach Boys and the punk movement coming together in a calamitous howl. It's not so much the Pet Sounds studio wankery that Black Francis and company drew from, but rather the melody and the feel of the Beach Boys beach music. The Pixies have made some the last classic surf tunes (Doing the Manta Ray, Wave of Mutilation), but infused it with a raging punk aesthetic. The Pixies also, through all that, remained relatively un-gloomy. The Pumpkins, while occasionally adventurous in the studio, as in Tonight, Tonight, draw far too heavily on the angst and bombast of the intervening 1970's heavy metal scenes, and their (okay, Billy Corgan's) addiction to studio perfection makes me wonder where the punk comes in.

Andrew, apologies for simply standing up and leaving my computer for an hour and a half. I honestly have no idea what came over me.
Oh, wait, now I remember. This guy came by with a petition because our evil landlords are about to cut off our cable, despite the fact that they billed it as 'a free amenity.' So they're trying to get them to take it back. Ah, the folly of youths.
Weirdly enough, I went to Liz's mothers hometown of Monticello (pronounced Mon-te-sell-o, just to set it apart from that other Monticello) this past Saturday. It's a cute small southern town whose claim to fame is that their courthouse was where 'My Cousin Vinny' was filmed. An enjoyable saturday foray.

Well, I've taken a plunge (I was going to say _the_ plunge, but then I realized it was more simply one of the things i've been meaning to do). After much recommendation and talk from people who are more dedicated readers than I, I bought a big book o' Borges. That should keep me busy.

On a related note, Andrew sent me a picture of Liz and I as cute couple. I've titled it 'Yound Heroes in Love' and put it on my desktop. ::sigh:: I'm so ready for middle age.

Andrew:
1. If you want some webspace, i wouldn't mind (somewhat temporarily) hosting a page at my keenspace account.
2. For scanning soft media, you might want to try to get a thin piece of clear plexiglass or something to scan 'through'. As long as it lies flat on the glass you shouldn't get any distortion or anything. Hell, saran wrap might work if pull tightly enough. Good luck!

Well, I went to the doctor yesterday, and they told me I wasn't going to die. It's the little things in life. I also gots me some anti-spasmodics, which I'm a little wary to take, partially because the belly pain isn't that bad, partly because I have to let them dissolve under my tongue, which strikes me as some sort of bizarre propaganda for the Catholic Church, but mostly because I don't want to take something called an 'anti-spasmodic'. I've been called a 'spazz' enough in my life to know it's a bad thing.
On the other hand, the nurse practitioner was very nice, and drew lots of little diagrams to show my what was wrong with my lower intestine. It was almost enough to change my deeply held belief that all doctors are, deep down, sadists.

It started out as a nice weekend
Liz and I went out on Friday and just sort of did stuff for the first time in a while. We wore ourselves out doing. We went to a ::shudder:: mall, where our express purpose was to find chairs. We did not. However, we did purchase a few dreamcast games for a very small amount of money, got The Princess Bride, which I've been looking for for months, but hadn't been able to find for some weird reason. We also got a beginning-style cookbook to expand our culinary vocabulary (watching too much Iron Chef has given me delusions that I could cook a great meal in an hour, even if I were given something like fish guts).
The mall was kind of nice, i.e. it was totally empty. Oh, and the only type of shoe that shoe stores stock anymore are the bizarro moon-booty running shoes. Wait, they have All Stars, but not in my size. My feet are too tiny.
Anyway, after eating lunch we went and saw Ghost World. Great movie, highly recommended. Sort of bitter and iconoclastic, but still great. Probably the most enjoyable thing I've seen in a while.
We got home, played some DC (Worms World Party! Booo!) and went out and had a really, really good dinner at this fusion place called the East West Bistro. We will be going back there to sample more of their delicious food. Then we came home and went to bed.
And now I feel like hell. Ech.

Moss and I were discussing Leviathan and both of us sort of want to re-read it. Realizing that I would not, in fact, reread it by myself, I asked Moss if he would be interested in having an IRC discussion on it. Anyway, we're going to have an IRC discussion, a couple chapters for the next few months, on Leviathan, and anyone who wants to join us is welcome.
