I've been puzzling over how I feel about this for a while now. I understand Tim's distaste for the hype over a sex scandal being used to win votes, but I still think it is a big deal and ought to be fussed over. I think the reason is that adults who behave inappropriately toward children should be publicly shamed so that children who are harrassed by adults in the future will feel more secure in telling other adults about it. Things like this ought not to be hushed up because that leads to violated parties hushing themselves up.

Additionally, the person who chairs the Missing and Exploited Children's committee ought not to be someone who tends to go for very young people, even if they are just old enough to consent legally (in some places at least). This committee ought to be chaired by someone who is attracted people more in their own age range. Not sure how one could really legally ever impose such a restriction, though, much less enforce it. It also seems that systematically propositioning people who work far below you is a nasty business, which should be discouraged. But how to do that effectively? I don't know.

I worry that had this man been a woman propositioning young boys, no one would care. I have no idea what people would think if she'd been a lesbian. I think the problem with this case, fundamentally, is not about gender, but (as Liz said) about power. I just wish that the media and general public felt the same way. I am uncomfortable with the hype because it seems to be less about the real problem (adults should not behave inappropriately with minors) and more about name calling for the sake of political victory. This worries me because I feel it might not actually encourage any other teenagers to tell on adults who are harrassing them, and it seems important that they should. Thoughts? _

I know I am just asking for trouble here, but I can't help it. I really am wondering. What if he'd been a woman, and not a gay man? Everyone keeps talking about what if he'd been a straight man and the teenagers were girls, but what if he'd been a woman? _

The day is through and I have not finished everything on my list, but I did make some good headway. In addition to the stuff on my list, I also sent 4 more things out. Cards to C and S, and packages to M and M.

Tomorrow is Work from 6-2, then writing from 3-6, then Maria's play at 8. I'll post at 6 p.m. about whether or not I finished the stories for R and MM on my list.

The laundry will be done on Saturday, and we will take all of it including the rest of the hamper stuff (which I have gone through roughly half of at this point). Post washing and hanging up we will go through a second culling pass on Saturday afternoon. Hopefully we'll reduce the amount of unused clothing significantly.

Now it is time for a bit of "Yes, Minister" before bed. _

Woke up with a terrible headache so slept until much later than anticipated. Still, the day is fairly young.

To Do on Accomplishment Thursday:

*Send Rent Check Also sent shirt to C.

*Reserve tea for 3 for 4th of November tea shop anniversary party Tea shop proprietor sounded excited when I asked for the Anniversary one. "Oh, so my thing went out and people are asking!" Very cute.

*Cull unwearable clothes from closet Didn't cull them from overflowing clothes hamper, but did from closet. Also divided closet into Moss and Julia sides for easier getting dressed in morning.

*Take them to Good Will if still in decent condition Just one 13 gallon garbage bag full, but still, a good start.

*Trash them if not Also tossed all the hangers that were bent up and not much good.

*Of all wearable clothes separate clean from dirty Still not through all clothes from hamper, but through all of closet

*Finish story for R

*Eat lunch Fried Green Tomatoes and She Crab Soup. Not really sure how she crab differs in taste from he crab, but it was quite tasty in a crabsish way.

*Write story for MM

*20 minutes of general tidying

*Move money from one bank account to the other

*Try Home Depot for Rubbermaid bins of correct size since Target failed us Home Depot also failed. Hmm. Where can one buy 8 or 10 gallon Rubbermaid Roughnecks?

*Wash all dirty clothes at Laundromat

*Eat dinner Chicken and asparagus and potatoes and roasted squash/carrots/greenbeans. _

Today I:

*Ate Too Many Cookies

*Took the car in to the mechanic for routine maintenance (did not wait until, for instance, car died on road in middle of night in Delaware... Just as a hypothetical example...)

*Played with Kitten War for way too long

*Ordered Christmas Presents for CapLynn and Dev, plus Birthday presents for Madre and James

*Dropped package off at co-worker's store as promised

*Took a short walk while dropping said package off

*Fetched car from mechanic

*Did 25 minutes on elliptical trainer

*Washed the Dishes

I feel like I've been rather lazy all told, and not so great about taking care of myself (see first item on list), but I think looking at it all in type shows that I actually did not completely waste the day. Tomorow will be a less lazy day, though. Tomorrow is an Accomplishment Thursday. You may expect a list in the morning. _

About twice a year for a week or two I get a wild urge to listen to NPR while driving to and from work. Inevitably whenever this happens, the local stations decide to do pledge drives. It's uncanny. Anyway, this morning I was listening to Forum on KQED, and it was all about architecture in San Francisco and how to incorporate green building plans, etc., and it got me thinking.

I want to really like environmentally good architecture, but most of the time the aesthetics turn me off. What struck me during the show was that the guest architects seemed to veer toward suggesting that people don't like modern design because they fear change, and that basically they need to get over it. The host tried several times to ask what solution they might give to a person who wanted a green residence, but also wanted to live in a Victorian style house, but their collective answer was that those people wouldn't really want a Victorian house and that once they were introduced to the architect's aesthetic preferences they would change their minds. When the host indicated that his hypothetical Victorian house fanciers might not change their minds, the architects basically said that they would be wrongheaded to want an old style of building when this is Now and not Then and that society needs to concentrate on the present and future instead of outdated things.

The answers troubled me, but one of them kept insisting that the root of aesthetic appeal in a home was comfort and that if you could work out what makes a person comfortable, you could design a modern, geen building that would appeal to them as much as the Victorian. I thought that this sounded at least somewhat reasonable and wondered (being in the car and unable to see any of the designs these particular architects came up with at the time) whether maybe their designs incorporated traditional elements and creative, pretty styles as well as the sharp, minimalist look I associate with modern design. Well, now I'm home, so I decided to take a look and see how well I would enjoy living in or near the green buildings the Forum guests built.

Jennifer Devlin of EHDD Architecture has not convinced me, although I admire her firm's efforts to make affordable and efficient housing.

Joshua Aidlin of Aidlin-Darling Design seemed very much attached to his designs as art, which people should enjoy if they knew what was good for them. His desings do seem very artsy in their sharp minimalism, but he hasn't convinced me to trust him with my future green dream home either.

David Baker of David Baker and Partners Architects seemed pretty adamant that society needed to move on, and I was pretty sure we wouldn't see eye to eye, so it gave me a bit of a laugh when I found out that he was responsible for our very own Hotel Healdsburg, which manages to be elegant and ugly all at the same time, an appeals to my aesthetic sense much less than all the pretty Victorian houses in town.

That left only one architect left to try to win my bid: Eugene Tsui of Tsui Design and Research, Inc. I clicked through the google link prepared for disappointment, but wow! He made a good show and got me hooked into really looking at his work. The buildings are unique and soft-edged and really do feel like art. Liveable art! I don't know if I really want a house like this one, but I would happily at least live near some Tsui buildings. It's the first modern design portfolio that's made me feel warm and excited instead of cold and distant. Yay Eugene Tsui! I can only imagine he was the guest who kept saying people needed to be comfortable and should acheive this with curves and flowing lines instead of straight edges and sharp angles. I can dig that.

So I feel better knowing that modern builders exist who make buildings I enjoy, but there's still a problem. Why would it be such a bad idea to build a new house of new materials that was styled in an old-fashioned way? Shouldn't we make new technology and materials work for us to achieve looks we like in sustainable efficient forms? Why must we eschew older styles if we like them? I am seriously asking this. Please tell me your thoughts. _

Not sure what was up with Flickr this weekend. I sent it six or seven pictures, but it only posted three, and one of those it posted three separate times. Now that I am back in the land of accessible internet, I have deleted the duplicates and posted the rest, but the whole thing still baffles me. We had a great time in Portland (Oregon) this weekend, by the way. That's where all the pictures came from. _
