We didn't actually intend to stop at the Hostess outlet at all. We were on our way somewhere else when we passed by, but it seemed a good opportunity to sate Ange's curiosity.

None of us actually ate any Twinkies, but we bought nine different types of Hostess snack cakes to send to Angie in Australia.

I get a fair amount of spam from mail order brides, enough so that I've begun to wonder how many people actually try this. I googled "Mail Order Brides" and found not only a heap of sites advertising hot Russian ladies, but also scamwatch sites, some from people who seem to have actually scored a foreign bride via teh intarweb and want to guide other like-minded men.
I read a book once when I was younger about a mail order bride going from Maine or Massachusetts to Montana or the like, and I thought it was fascinating, but in some ways sensible. Her choice seemed to be to live out her life as a textile mill worker or to take a chance at making it as a homesteader's wife. She didn't know him, and it would be a rough life, but then it could be lucrative, exciting, better than factory drudgery. Was Sarah (the Plain and Tall one) also a mail order bride? I think she might have been.
I just wonder how many women are willing mail order brides today. How is their reasoning similar or different to the 19th century brides I remember reading about? What is the ratio of real mail order brides to phonies out to make a quick buck off of the stupid rich American (clearly plenty of scammers must exist with all the spam I get)? As for the scams themselves, somehow I suspect they are less exciting and complex that the one in that Nicole Kidman movie. But who are the brides? And are the marriages successful more often than not? What's the goal anyway? To start a family in a better place, or just to stay married long enough to become a naturalized U.S. citizen?
