And here's another page (from the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz) on the subject of citrus trees in general with a nice little list of common fruits and their seasons. _

I am finally burning my blogswap discs. Mirabai and Sarah already have their copies, but now there are two more copies ready to send out. I suppose they ought to go to Katherine and Tim and Erika as we've received theirs already. Then I'll need to do ones for Moira and Annelet and Martin and Remi and Neil and... erm... other people including Jenny and Cait. And one of these days I'll try and remember to post a track listing and some brief commentary for anyone who is interested in that sort of thing. _

While Mirabai was here we took her to a sushi place in Sebastopol only to find out that the owner also runs the place she likes in Missoula. Apparently he divides his time between the two places. Odd coincidence, but very tasty sushi. _

We had an early Christmas last weekend with my mother and her foreign exchange students and Mirabai and my friend from high school, Deidra. Highlights included the German exchange student serving us tea and cake in the afternoon, and our exciting gift exchange in the evening. To prepare for the gift exchange Madre and Moss and Mira and I went on a madcap shopping spree at various luxury boutiques such as the Dollar Tree. Moss and I ended up giving each other the very same thing: a ninja playset. What can I say? We're mammals. But the best-loved gift was Deidra's Desert Recon Barbie. She comes complete with two guns. Deidra renamed her G.I. Jessica. The runner up was Deidra's mystery gift. In the package it looked like some sort of transparent plastic thing with an alien and yellow feathers inside. We all had to wait until she opened it to find that it was an alien party inside an oval beach ball. The least loved present was Mira's sparkly green halter top with velcro fastenings. Try as we might, we still haven't convinced her to model it for us. We did get a good picture of her holding it and looking disgusted, though. In any case, fun was had, and will continue to be had for a few more days before Miss Mira leaves us for the thrills and splendors of Seattle. Blogging will probably resume with more frequency after then. _

This got me thinking. Here is a very non-exhaustive list of things I like that you may snicker about behind my back, or even in front of it.

*Alanis Morrisette's first album

*The Haunted Mansion.

*South Pacific

*More bad music

*Romance novels

*Instant mashed potatoes

*Bette Midler

*Waiting for the green light at crosswalks

*Alcohol that tastes like candy

*Dipping cookies in water

*Sabrina the Teenage Witch

So, there you have it. Laugh at will. I bet you've all got stuff like this hidden somehwere, too, though. _

From the Baby-Sitters Club book that Sarah sent me:

"...looking for a new job... is not easy. Dad will have to hear people say no to him a lot. He might start applying for jobs that are below the level of the one he's got now, and people still might say no. He'll call companies and hear other people say that there aren't any jobs at all. It would be like going over to your friends' houses and hearing each one of them say they don't want to play with you."

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. _

So I just didn't feel up to going out and turning in applications at McDonald's and the Dollar Tree today. (I still have this itchy rash badness that makes me grarlike. I hope it goes away soon. But that's beside the point). I stayed home and I'm so glad I did because it meant I didn't miss the UPS man. The UPS man who magically brought me a NaNoWriMo t-shirt even though I never ordered or paid for one. I immediately put it on over my plum colored dress, which, admittedly, looks a bit odd, but I don't care. I'm more smug than the cat who was up on the fence stalking the UPS man's hat while I signed for the package. Who is responsible for this? Please name yourself(ves?) so I can pounce and express my thanks properly. _

Majestic Wildomar is truly... majestic. Last night all the dogs in the neighborhood howled in a clear, luminescent blue serenade. It was around two when this happened, and my sleep-clouded brain decided there must be an alien or ghostly presence sweeping through to make them all raise their voices in such a fashion. I couldn't tell whether it was communication or despair. Or fear. _

I spoke to my grandfather on the telephone today. I called to ask for instructions on making gravy, because his is usually quite yum. And then he actually started talking to me. It was only a ten or fifteen minute talk, but this is rather astonishing as my grandfather might be described as... well fairly reticent at least. It was nice to actually chat.

I think he must feel lonely and unsure at this time due to the whole moving out of the house he's lived in for fifty-five years thing. I can't even imagine the full scope of memories and things he must feel like he's going to leave behind. He said he's gotten rid of "about thirty-five tons of junk." We commiserated about the general hassles of moving, and he said that the new owners (who will take over on the 4th of December) are nice people. I guess that's some consolation.

I can't help feeling a bit sad for him, though. I imagine it means really saying good bye to his life with my grandmother, who lived there with him until she died when I was seventeen (on my seventeenth birthday, actually, which was also my grandfather's seventy-seventh birthday).

My grandparents are a bit of a puzzle to me, because they certainly don't (or didn't as the case may be) think like me in many respects, and they never shared anything personal with me, but it was still quite plain that he loved her very much (and I think it went both ways). I wonder if he'll become a ladies man now that he's saying his good byes and moving to a ritzy senior community with a gourmet chef. His sisters are already there and I think they may have quite a few plans for him. I just hope the change doesn't break him. _

I took the day off from the novel today. I figure with 4k yesterday (end count being 26,086), I was in a good position to do so, and I needed the time to just chill and sit on the plot for a bit. I (mostly) know where it's going, but I'm taking the time to compare different routes. Moss and I spent the whole day nowhere near a computer, which was a good thing to do. Of course tomorrow it's back to work. I think I'll be ready to get down to it, though. Also, I get to feel productive and like I exercised my writing brain because I talked through plot snags with Mirabai. Overall, I call today a roaring success. _
