I've got rosin on my nose and toothpaste on my chin. The toothpaste is, apparently, an old beauty pageant trick for stubborn spots. I'll see if it works in the morning. The rosin is from practicing my sweet violin again for the first time in ages. The E-string fine tuner went kablooey last time I played Jazz on it, and I didn't have time to get it replaced 'til yesterday. Now it's all fine (though I wound up scratching the wood under the tailboard during restringing, damnit. You can't see it unless you look, and I'm pretty sure it can be polished out, but grr.) and it sounds wonderfully boomy in this big empty apartment. My new roommate (who moved in several weeks ago) plays the viola, so I downloaded some baroque duets and hope I can convince her to try 'em out with me. What I'd really love is to play second fiddle in a string quartet, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Still, still. I'm happy. Not playing music sucks ass-balls. Gotta keep on it.

I've been trying to improve my habits. I'm using this thing, which is free, and works by ticky boxes. It's amazing what an incentive a ticky box can be. I've got one that says "eat a fruit or vegetable", and I swear to you, I've been passing up potato chips for cantaloupe just so I can look forward to the satisfaction of ticking that freakin' ticky box when I come home. I've also been keeping track of all my time on the internet, though not actively curtailing it. I'm hoping better behavior will follow more specific awareness of my own doings, and so far it's mostly seeming to.

Sound off! One, two--

The black shorts that my followers wear are symbolic. They signify the brevity of our patience with present-day political apathy. And black is symbolic of the fact, that so riddled with inefficiency is our present-day industrial structure, my suppliers ran out of all the other colours.

Yes, I've joined the Black Shorts. Sitting in the park, eating my lunch, I inexplicably managed to rip a gaping (not to say revealing) hole in the right thigh of my pants, and since, in the immortal words of Brian from Avenue Q, I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today, I had to find myself alternative leggings pretty precipitately.

The only place that sold anything resembling clothing for blocks around (keep in mind that this is Long Island City and that I had five minutes left of my lunch break) was the Military Surplus store. $15 later, I'm the owner of a brand new pair of ridiculous inky knickerbockers. Kind of wish I hadn't shaved off my glorious satyr pelt in a fit of whimsy a few weeks ago, though. My tender new bristles are... unbecoming-- plus, I'm going to a play tonight and won't have time to change, god help me. I'm sure this all builds character.

On the bright side, I just won $10 on a $5 scratch-off ticket. _

Finger-muddling things about the steno keyboard:

The L key lies under the right ring finger, which is very handy, as it's that way on a qwerty keyboard as well. Same goes for the initial R, though not for the terminal R, so it's a little more confusing-- also, it's on the bottom instead of the top.

The W, conversely, is typed with the left ring finger on a qwerty and with the left middle finger on a stenotype, which is easy enough to keep straight as long as I have time to think about it, but which is causing me trouble at higher speeds.

The F on the right hand was easy to remember, because it's the finger I use to play an F on the trumpet.

T is being a finch. You'll notice that the only letters with both initial and terminal keys are R, S, P, and T. The R, S, and P keys lie under the same fingers on each hand, but T is typed with the pinky on the right and with the ring finger on the left.

Haven't even tried to work in D, Z, or the vowels. But I'm getting quicker with the home keys, at least. _

This is an excellent explanation of the sort of job I'd eventually like to get. It's widely used not only in research but at actual class lectures, which sounds fabulous to me-- getting paid to go to school, without the homework! In my underwear!!

So I've been practicing at the machine a fair bit. I had been using some freeware with downloadable drills that clicked along, letter by letter, at a specified BPM, but that got a little dull by itself, so I turned off the metronome function and just used 'em static. That means I can put on the Well-Tempered Clavier and take the rhythm of whatever comes up, which is sometimes soothing and sometimes insane but pretty much all sublime. I have to skip past a few of the real rip-roarers, but mostly I can keep up, and it makes me feel like frikkin' Horowitz or something. I just slip into a trance and plunkity-plunk. _
