Moss's Bloglet

About

This is the personal weblog of Moss Collum, a programmer living in Boston, MA. I used to have a description here of what I tend to blog about, but whenever I try to nail down a few main topics, I end up getting interested in something else. If you want to know what to expect, browsing the recent archives should give you some idea.

If you've found this page through Google, I hope it helps. The search tool may help find the exact post you're looking for. If you want to see what I've posted lately, you can go to the front page of the blog.

If you're someone I know, you probably already know about this blog and come here regularly, but if not, please leave me a note: chances are I'd be delighted to hear from you.

If you want to contact me, you can email me at gmail (where my address is my first name dot my last name), or just leave a comment here.

Note that the "Bloglet" of my page title is the Perl script I use for my blogging, not the other, better known Bloglet.

Evaporative Cooling of Group Beliefs is a surprisingly useful metaphor. More important than the metaphor, though, is the fact that the passing explanation in the middle helped me finally get how evaporative cooling actually works. _

I have to say, I'm pretty happy with how this thing is working out. Frequent reminders to blog, plus no responsibility to tend to the blog after I've posted, plus no sense of obligation to say anything well thought out or sensical, equals a great place to post ideas that are burbling around in here and no reason not to. _

I could do it in the same class – in the gui – but fortunately the pixies step in to prevent me making these poor design decisions. “Oh, I’ll do that for you!” one of the pixies calls out. (They usually start with this phrase, and they’re all called Thistle.) _

So mostly, bleach is what I remember. He'd come home, after work, and take out a jug of bleach, and put it on the edge of the kitchen sink. And then -- so that he didn't "look bad," he told me, "so he could take girls out on dates" -- he'd use it to scrub the ink stains off his hands.

I don't know what my deal is, around class, but it starts here.

Sady Doyle talks about class. It is all worth reading. _

A little something just for Martin:
Although originally made with gin and vermouth and garnished with an olive, the martini has evolved from a simple American concoction to a worldwide drink of equal parts sophistication, style and substance. Whipped Lightning® is the perfect way to continue the tradition of experimentation with the classiest of all drinks. Just imagine your favorite martini topped with the simple elegance that is Whipahol®. _
