Moss's Bloglet

About

This is the personal weblog of Moss Collum, a programmer living in Boston, MA. I used to have a description here of what I tend to blog about, but whenever I try to nail down a few main topics, I end up getting interested in something else. If you want to know what to expect, browsing the recent archives should give you some idea.

If you've found this page through Google, I hope it helps. The search tool may help find the exact post you're looking for. If you want to see what I've posted lately, you can go to the front page of the blog.

If you're someone I know, you probably already know about this blog and come here regularly, but if not, please leave me a note: chances are I'd be delighted to hear from you.

If you want to contact me, you can email me at gmail (where my address is my first name dot my last name), or just leave a comment here.

Note that the "Bloglet" of my page title is the Perl script I use for my blogging, not the other, better known Bloglet.

Ever since getting an ice cream maker for my birthday (my mother sent me an ice cream maker for my birthday! yay!), I keep discovering new esoteric flavors that I want to try. Some are relatively straightforward, and decently likely to be tasty: black pepper ice cream; basil and lime sorbet. Others, though, seem riskier, yet still horribly compelling: regular ice cream with astronaut ice cream chunks?

Others are still uncategorized, like caramelized onion, or cilantro chip.

The new mostly-Tory government in the UK has astonished me by doing something I really like: they're asking the public for comments on laws and regulations that should be repealed. After several years of really alarming increases in state power (both there and here), this is the sort of thing that's desperately needed, but I never imagined it could actually happen. We'll see if it goes anywhere. I'd love to see the same sort of thing happen in the U.S., but so far the Obama administration has shown sadly little interest in restoring civil liberties, and I can't imagine the Republicans even considering it. _

Not four hours ago, I thought to myself "It would be nice if there was a desktop mail application that integrated with GMail as well as the app on Android phones does". Then, just now, I read this interview with Aaron Swartz where he recommended Mailplane. It seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks, internet! Thinternet! _

And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you - where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's, and if you cut them down -- and you're just the man to do it -- do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

It's a moving quote, and it contradicts the ultimate message of the play: More is executed regardless; the devil will take what he pleases, and all the laws in England will not do a damned thing to stop him in the end. _
