Moss's Bloglet

About

This is the personal weblog of Moss Collum, a programmer living in Boston, MA. I used to have a description here of what I tend to blog about, but whenever I try to nail down a few main topics, I end up getting interested in something else. If you want to know what to expect, browsing the recent archives should give you some idea.

If you've found this page through Google, I hope it helps. The search tool may help find the exact post you're looking for. If you want to see what I've posted lately, you can go to the front page of the blog.

If you're someone I know, you probably already know about this blog and come here regularly, but if not, please leave me a note: chances are I'd be delighted to hear from you.

If you want to contact me, you can email me at gmail (where my address is my first name dot my last name), or just leave a comment here.

Note that the "Bloglet" of my page title is the Perl script I use for my blogging, not the other, better known Bloglet.

Dulce Et Decorum Est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.

GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And floundering like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

How can you countenance someone who was engaged in bombings that could have or did kill innocent people?

Far from being unthinkable, this is not even a point of distinction between the candidates, both of whom spent the first debate eagerly claiming the support of Henry Kissinger. _

Giving people you disagree with credit for showing logical consistency is generally a mistake. In fact, I'll go further than that: if someone is absolutely logically consistent in their beliefs, that's almost reason enough to be suspicious of them. Most of our beliefs aren't apodictic truths; they're messy attempts to resolve partial and conflicting evidence. Reasonable people recognize this, and won't cling too tightly to the conclusions of elaborate chains of logic if they have more immediate cause to doubt those conclusions. _

The blog tracker is back. Other stuff is still to come, and for now it's time for bed, but things are looking hopeful. Please let me know if you have any problems--there was some fiddling around to get it moved over to the new server, and I don't know if there's anything I missed. _

The latest Stack Overflow podcast has an interesting chat with Josh Millard (AKA cortex, one of the MetaFilter moderators) about online communities, if you're into that kind of thing. Stack Overflow, for those who don't know, is a new site for programming questions, started by Jeff Atwood of Coding Horror and Joel Spolsky of Joel on Software. It's very like a programming specific Ask MetaFilter in some ways, particularly the preference for specific answerable questions over general discussion topics, but it's also got rather a different approach to moderation, relying more on Digg- or Reddit-style voting rather than MetaFilter-style social norms.

Speaking of online communities, or something, progress continues on getting BLT and Neil's and Martin's blogs back, but is going slower than I'd like, mostly for lack of time. Currently thinking by end of Wednesday. _

Well, shit. Here's the update on what happened last week: One of the two disk partitions on Hobbes crashed. The hosting company wasn't able to recover it. They don't have any backups, and, disgracefully, neither do I. We've lost most of Neil's blog archives, as well as my photo gallery. Everything else should be recoverable, though it'll be a few days before I can get it up and running again. I'm looking at moving to a more reliable host, and setting up a plan for backups. Both things I should have done years ago. Sorry, Neil. _
