Some kids at MIT are building a collection of free MP3s of classical music. This means actual recordings, not fucking MIDI. I haven't listened to any of it yet, so I can't make promises regarding the quality of the performances, but it does sound interesting.

So I've just been reading the Metafilter discussion about "cuddle parties". I'm not sure what I think of the idea myself, but it has led to an entertaining MeFi thread.

The previous meme of blaming Leo Strauss for the neocons was odd, but it wasn't half so bizarre as the new meme of blaming them on Leon Trotsky.

Been browsing the Python Cookbook. Most interesting things so far: evaluating code inside strings, and a recipe that demonstrates the need for itself.

Another potentially great science fiction movie ruined by Keanu Reeves. (Actually, for all I've enjoyed some of Mr. Linklater's other work, nothing else about this movie looks terribly promising either, so perhaps I shouldn't blame Keanu.)
Update: I had not realized this at first glance, but it is also animated.

I'm well aware that I'm the only one who can take responsibility for my life. But if a man kicks me in the face, steals my money, and then tells me I should learn to defend myself, I may doubt his motives, not to mention his sincerity.

Also, in passing: I've been thinking about an argument some leftists make, that we shouldn't work to improve the condition of workers in the current system, because letting things get as bad as possible will hasten the revolution. This is pretty directly comparable to the current U.S. policy against Cuba, isn't it? And to the sanctions against Iraq. You can see what an effective strategy it is.

No one in the news media seems interested in telling me anything substantive about John Kerry. Likewise, Democrats I hear from only seem to want to talk about defeating Bush. Unaffiliated leftists seem to reject him out of habit (or, again, support him for the sake of defeating Bush), but also don't seem to offer any substantial criticism, as they notably did of Clinton. Republicans actually do have a bit to say about Kerry's policy proposals; unfortunately, most of it doesn't go beyond cheap smears. So I suppose if I want to know anything about Kerry, I'm going to have to look it up for myself. His website seems to have a lot to say, so I don't imagine it should be too terribly hard. I'm sure his voting records in congress can be found online, too. I'm just annoyed 'cause this seems like the sort of research I'd expect newspapers to do for me. Anyway, I'll try to report back about what I find.
(Credit where credit is due: I was moved to do this by reading Matthew Yglesias actually saying something substantial--and encouraging--about Kerry, and realizing just how rare that is.)

Language Log: I thought this was an especially nice little example of a correlation that might seem surprising, until you think of it: the people who complain the most about linguistic usage are also usually the people who are most ignorant and confused about how to analyze it and describe it.

cx_Freeze is a set of utilities for freezing Python scripts into executables
This is a way to package a Python script so that someone can run it even if they don't have the Python language on their computer. There are some other ways of doing this, but this one appears to have some advantages over the others--in particular, it's cross-platform.
