I’ve fixed the problem that was keeping comments from working on some of the older galleries. It turned out to be something much simpler than I thought it would be.

Summary of conclusions: my intellectual judgment reacts to Ayn Rand's works in much the same way my aesthetic judgment reacts to Walt Disney's. I'd guess there are about the same shares of justice and injustice in each of those judgments. _

Wanted: a Python script for determining the meter of a line of verse. At the very least, one for doing a syllable count. Ideally, one capable of checking whether two words rhyme. I imagine this would have to be done with some sort of dictionary. _

I’m back at work after two weeks off. Things are less hectic now, so I imagine I’ll start blogging again (and reading other blogs—something I’ve done almost none of for the past two weeks). Christmas was lovely.

Pyrex is a Python-like language that compiles down to C. It's like a lower-level version of Python, for writing faster extension modules. A fascinating idea. I want to try it out. This could make it almost trivially easy to apply the Alternate Hard And Soft Layers design pattern. _

Matt Haughey and Jason Kottke have been talking recently about "Customized Classics", a website that offers various classic works of literature with your name substituted in for that of the lead character.

Now, I tend to agree that copyright law today is too restrictive, but if this sort of thing is really a typical example of the "value [the public domain] can give us as a culture," I just can't imagine getting worked up over it all. Matt's a smart guy who clearly cares about this stuff. If an overpriced novelty item really demonstrates the value of less restrictive copyrights better than anything else he can think of, then there must be something more important to fight for. _

So, version 2.0 of My Card Maker is up. The big new features are user accounts (i.e., you can log in and see all the cards you've made in the past, load them up, and edit them) and event reminders. There are also all sorts of changes to the internals of the thing that make it more reliable and more powerful, and easier for us to add features to. Building these tools is (approximately) what I do at work. _

There are among the Democrats those who, while they aren’t too fond of Bush, reserve the full force of their hatred for another candidate in the 2000 presidential election: Ralph Nader. Mr. Nader’s crime, of course, was to deprive Al Gore of the votes of a handful of people who fundamentally disagreed with him. These stridently anti-Nader Democrats become so inflamed at the very mention of their enemy’s name that they are left shaking with rage and hurling out incoherent expletives to whoever will listen. They are offputting, embarrassing, and often a little scary, and when I have doubts about voting for a Democrat in 2004, it is generally these people that cause them.

Anyhow, a wonderful post at Keywords has taken the time to explain just why people voted for Nader, and why it doesn’t make sense to blame him for Gore’s loss. I don’t know if it will do any good, but it’s still refreshing to see it stated in detail.
