Is there a good library for writing an AIM server? I thought of it because I want to build an Instant Messenger proxy: a server that an AIM client could connect to, in place of the usual server at AOL, that would then in turn connect to AOL's server, and that would do various good and spiffy things, like saving transcripts and... um... some sort of other nifty stuff. (It's the transcripts that made me think of it--I use different AIM clients at home and at work, and they both keep full logs of everything, but I'd just as soon have them keep them in the same format and in the same place.)

(Alternatively, I suppose I could write my own AIM client, and make it possible to use it over the web, and just connect to that from work. Or some variation on that theme--basically, make the connection to the AOL server always be on the same computer, and just connect to that computer from elsewhere.) _

1) I currently have an hour long commute to work. (This will change when I move somewhere closer, but I will still have some sort of commute, most likely about half an hour.)
2) This is time when I'm not really doing anything.
3) I can't read anything during this time, for obvious reasons, but I can listen to the radio, tapes, or mp3s.
4) There are various blogs that I read every morning.
(Do you see where this is going yet?)
5) I read most of them as RSS feeds.
6) This means it's relatively easy for a computer program to identify just the content of new entries in a given blog.
7) My computer has perfectly serviceable speech synthesis software.
(Yeah, here it comes now.)
8) I want a program to download a list of RSS feeds, record an mp3 of it reading the new entries from each one, and transfer it to my iPod, each morning before I leave for work. _

Okay, so Martin's BLT is still very beta, but also, if you use it, and it's working, you'll see that it is now tracking my MT test blog. That's right, we've got a BLT that shows a Movable Type weblog. There'll still be some more hacking to do before it's just right (I need to make it ping and aggregate feeds on one server, to make the whole thing faster and less bandwidth-usey), but basically, concept has been proven. Here's the template for the tsv feed and the MT plugin needed to make it work. _

Oh, wait, I was just being dense. I saw the pretty linkback system at diveintomark, but I didn't see that PySiteStats handles the rest of it, the actual logfile parsing stuff. Okay, so that's all good. I can just use that. It means new referrers will only show up daily, but that's okay--I'm mostly intending this as a way to keep long-term records of backlinks, and speed isn't important for that. _

Looking into referrer linkback. For nice display of referrers, I want something based on Mark Pilgrim's further reading linkback script. For initial gathering of referrers, I can either write something to go through my log file each night, or use a PHP or CGI script to gather referrers as I get them. There are several such solutions [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6], but they all try to handle display as well. So what I really want to do is take one of these programs, cut out the display part of it so all it does is create a database of referrals, and write a script to prettily display a given entries referalls using linkback.py. Hrmm. It's all pretty trivial, really, but it looks ugly from here. It needs to be able to identify duplicates with slightly different URLs. It also needs to treat search engines differently. _
