The recent problems in m14m.net-related blt stuff were triggered by the upgrade to FreeBSD 4.6. (The problems in comments on various blogs and in the recent activities sidebar here were derivative of the blt problems). If you want the full technical details, read on.

The First Problem: I use ZODB to store blt info here, and it includes several C libraries, which, of course, I compiled myself and installed in my home directory. They were, of course, compiled for the version of Python that was installed before, so they didn't work with the new version.

The Second Problem: After I recompiled the libraries for Python 2.2, I found that I was still getting some errors. It seems that some file or other in the version of ZODB I'm using refers to a module that has been deprecated.

The Only Slightly Lame Solution: But Python 2.1 is still installed, it just isn't the default version. So I rebuilt the library for Python 2.1 again, and changed all the cgi scripts to specify that that was what they wanted to use. _

Oh, by the way: if anyone else has been watching Buffy mostly on DVD, and hasn't had the chance to see the third season yet, I've got mpgs of every episode now. (Every episode of season 3, that is.) If you send me media (I think it's about 1 cd-rom per episode) and promise to get the DVDs when they come out, I can make a copy. I think. Assuming the computer works right.

(This probably only goes for people I know.) _

I'm not totally serious about this, of course, but there's a reason I'm thinking about it. There are parts of the Wobble source code that are already starting to harden. It's getting hard to change them. A big dose of simplicity is called for, and I'm not quite sure where to get it, so I'm pushing in various directions to see how it might work. _

(A related idea is Aaron Swartz's "RSS 3.0". It's meant as a joke, of course--at least, I think it's meant as a joke--but a format like that could actually make a lot of sense as internal storage for Wobble. Not precisely that format, but something like it. I mean, anything that could inspire someone to write a Python oneliner clearly has something going for it. It's simple, editable as plain text, line-based, and (I suspect) easy and fast to parse.) _

Potential Wobble users: are post titles a good thing? Like, a title field for each individual blog entry?

Hmm... something broke m14m.net blt this morning, probably to do with the upgrade to FreeBSD 4.6. I think I've fixed it. Everything was still getting recorded, I believe, but for some reason the program to display the data won't work under cgiwrap anymore. Turns out it doesn't need to be cgiwrapped anyway, so I've taken that out as a workaround, but I'm still curious what the problem is. _

Discretion is not the same as deception. It sometimes makes sense not to tell people everything about yourself, when doing so would hurt them, or would hurt you. Secrets are not shameful. Secrets are not lies. And yet, the boundary line is so unclear sometimes. It is so easy to slip from one to the other before you even know you're doing it. _
