I made brownies last night with my fancy French butter. I used only fancy ingredients, except for eggs, cause we were all out of my cage free eggs, so I had to run down to the 7-11 to get some more.

Brianne insisted (to me) that we turn off the AC on the theory that goes essentially "October." Tracy turned it back on on the theory that it is 80 degrees and humid, and it gets hot upstairs. I see the validity to both points. I wish the weather would comply and be October.

Probably every other month, my landlord calls me to let me know that I managed to (again) write two different numbers on my rent check. I should just not be allowed to write checks.

So, Pratchett was at the National Book Festival, and I went along to hear him speak and to get my unsigned hardbacks signed. He was funny, but it was a less interesting speech then when I saw him in Philadelphia. I'm sure the time constraint added to that. Lara and I stood in the beating sun for more than an hour, and wound up chatting with the woman standing behind us in line. I got rather sunburnt (but not as badly as I often get. The pink is pretty entirely gone at this point). And the Book Festival people were thoroughly brilliant and kept sending volunteers through to hand out bottles of water, cause the last thing you want is someone getting heat stroke. There were parents with a baby in line around us, and we sniped nastily that "they were bad parents, you shouldn't have your baby standing around like that in direct sun" and didn't blame the kid at all for crying. We were totally relieved when the mother took the baby away somewhere else.

Mmm. Coffee and bagels. Even if isn't very good coffee and involves me disguising it beyond recognition with cream and sugar (the better coffee is, the less cream and sugar I feel the need to add. I cannot abide black coffee, but I do drink Turkish coffee, which somehow is it's entirely own thing) and the bagels came from the local grocery store. Still, it is breakfast. I don't eat breakfast most days, but on Fridays, I find myself expecting the donuts (or occasional bagels) Jasmine brings in, and I get really hungry if they aren't there.

My issues with this "summer hours" thing is that I wind up working far more than 40 hours a week. I'll work a bit of overtime each day (or, in the case of last week, I'll work 10 hour days for the first four days), and then I get really resentful of Fridays. First off, for whatever reason, all the really intense stuff with the Retirement Plan has wound up needing to go out on Friday, but it also takes more time for me to prepare it than the 4 hours that we are open. And it is my job now. I wind up exhausted and annoyed and, under the guise of wishful thinking, I stopped bringing a lunch on Fridays. The bus home only runs once an hour in the middle of the day (instead of the 3 or 4 times it does during rush hour times), so if I don't leave at the exact right time, I tend to wind up sitting there waiting for the bus getting crabbier and crabbier because I haven't had any food. Logic would dictate that if I refuse to bring food, I should just go out and buy some (which is what I did last week). But still. It is absurd. I don't think this is ever going to end.

I love seeing Vimes from outside of Vimes's head. Carrot, too, for that matter (I often wonder what it is like in Carrot's head. Even scenes that are just Carrot tend to not get into his head). Moist is awesome. I love reading his conversations with Vetinari.
I also tend to really like Pratchett's women. They tend to not be...silly and weak, at least not if they're important and recurring characters (Christine, say, from Maskerade was silly, and the tooth fairy in Hogfather), but the closes you ever really get to soppy silly recurring women is Magrat, and she is mostly silly because she is around Granny. Nanny also sometimes seems silly around Granny, but then, everyone is a bit silly next to Granny.
I want the next book to be about Susan. Also, I want her to have stayed with the guy who is Time.

Today, my day was slow enough that I was able to:
a: help with the folding and stuffing of payroll
b: actually take an hour for lunch, and go out with Nate
c: catch up on reading the mail packets that have been accumulating in my office for at least a month.

Phone call from Brianne: "There are no walnuts."
Me:"Um...no?"
Her: "Why are there no walnuts? Does Tracy not want walnuts?"
Me: "She said they aren't vital."
Her: "I think they are, don't you? Why didn't you get walnuts?"
Me: "Brianne, I forgot the carrots. If you think there should be walnuts, go get walnuts."

I think I had gone all unused to clay, cause my hands are drier than they usually are after a pottery class. That or it's just the combination of pottery on Sunday and folding paychecks on Monday.

When I used to send stuff by DHL from Alexandria to DC, it would take more than three days (I no longer take care of our center in DC). I used to joke that I should just take the metro into the city to drop it off. Meanwhile, on Friday we sent out a DHL to Guernsey, and it was received this morning.

Somehow, yesterday on my grocery shopping trip which was to buy stuff to make a carrot cake for Tracy's birthday (which is today), I didn't get carrots. I think it involves the whole "someone else putting their stuff in my cart" segment of the trip, although I can't quite figure out why they took my carrots out of the cart. I triple checked my receipt to make sure I didn't just leave them at the store, and, no, they definately weren't charged for. Brianne is going to make the cake today, and get carrots, and nutmeg (for whatever reason, I wrote down that the cake needs cinnamon, which we have, but not nutmeg, which we don't).

From Wikipedia's entry on Coupling and what happened after.
"Steve and Susan have two children now and have recently completed work on a sitcom about their early lives together. They're developing a new television project but it keeps getting delayed as he insists on writing episodes of some old kids show they recently pulled out of mothballs. She gets very cross about this and, if he says, "Yeah, but check out the season poll!"
