And then I dreamt I walked into the coffeeshop, and Hiram was back, visiting, and so were Nat and Jenna and Sarah. And it was very happy. _

Also in the convesation with Zeb. "So, how was Europe?" "Well, I was just in Amsterdam." (This, obviously, is the sense of other than Edinburgh.) "All right, then, how was Amsterdam?" "All right." "What did you do?" "Oh, nothing." "Nothing? You didn't visit their famous red-light district, or their famous coffee houses?" "Well, I went to cofee houses and walked around." _

In the conversation with my stepbrother Zeb, who is just now home from Edinburgh, where he was a bartender, "I'll make you a Black Forest martini, it tastes just like Black Forest cake. ((insert description of all the various zillions of things that you add to make this particular drink))" "Wow, that sounds really good," says I. "Yes," says he, "but just a sip for you." "Hey, I'm older than you are." "Are not!" "Am so!" "Well...I'm faster." "Fair enough. And you can probably hold your liquor better than I, but I can still drink a whole martini." And so then we discussed going to a bar and getting martinis. "We'll take Connor, he can drive. He can sit in the car. But, no, Ben Torres will meet him at the bar..." "Why is Ben Torres at the bar?" "Because he's meeting Connor, keep up with the conversation." "You know," I said, "in America they don't let people Connor's age into bars. This isn't Europe. They card you at the door, often enough. Besides, what bar would we go to?" _

I was walking back to my room after giving up on Mabel, and looked up at the sky. It was so pretty. For a moment I thought the moon was racing across the sky, but then it occurred to me that it was the clouds that were racinga cross the sky. _

I had this dream while I was taking a nap that the Baudelaire children found their father. And then Violet was going to invent a way to invent a time machine in order to observe electrons. When Heisenburg meets Lemony Snicket. _

The tights I wore today cause I wore a skirt and it's chilly out were all wonderful and nice and soft and better than any tights I'd ever worn (except that black ones that really manage to keep my legs warm when it's much colder than it was today, but those are just nifty cause they're warm) developed a run at some point in the day, and this makes me very very sad. _

I like that Mr. Tuck organizes the giving up meals thing every year. I think it would be cool if there were some way it could be organized that the money for meals people skipped over the week (someone is on the 14 meal play, say they eat 10 during the week) went to wherever they give this money, but that would probably not work. _

Someone in my math class (Bill, I think) said something about how we need to go into three dimensions in Euclidean space to understand a Lobochevskian plane, which we were all nodding our heads to, and then someone pointed out that of the two ways to understand Euclid in Lobochevski, you have to go into 3-D. _

We talked about satellites in math class today. We tried to get Mr. Beall to tell us about spy satellites, but he swears he knows nothing about spy satellites. But told us to go to www.spaceimaging.com. Cause they're impressive. _

After math, Bill tried to explain to me why we can't picture 3-D Lobochevski space. It involved a tesseract. Apparently, this is what we are going to talk about tomorrow in math, cause I wasn't the only one confused when the bell wrang. Mr. Beall walked by us as we stood on the steps of McDowell and Bill tried to explain this stuff to me, and he seemed to think it was mildly amusing. And now I am going to go try to find a picture of a tesseract, cause apparently there are such things. _

There is a reason most fondue restaurants don't build their fondue pots into their tables. I hope they give us a table with two pots this weekend, I called to ask them please to, cause I don't want meat juices, but they said since there are only three of us, they probably won't be able to. _

I think I find this Read to Kids thing to be utterly depressing. Today I spent most of the day reading to this girl who was surely older than 10, by the looks of her, and yet she was stumbling over simple children's books, I'm talking things like Where the Wild Things Are. I had this vague impression that she was reciting from memory rather than reading. Yes, there was one little girl running around with a copy of Little House on the Prairie that she appeared to actually be reading to herself, and she looked like she was six or seven, but most of them seem to be much further behind in their reading skills. I was telling my stepdad about it, and he said that when he was in high school, he did a reading class thing, and he would go once a week, and he quit when he came back one week after his kid had had a breakthrough, and then when he went home his father beat him because he could read and the father couldn't. I don't think these kids are that badly off, but it always makes me depressed to go. _

This morning the shower was being particularly nasty. It refused to be a nice sane shower temperature, and would freeze, so I'd turn it up hotter, and then it'd be way to hot the way it always is, so I'd turn it down, and as soon as I'd be standing under the water again, it would be all cold again. _

Brianne picked up three Griffon and Sabine books for me.
