We just kayaked down from Mystic lakes to the Meadow Glen Mall the other side of 93. Gave a very interesting picture of Medford.

To ramble a bit: The mindset of the people who want further provocation and confrontation with Pakistan now are unbelievable. It isn't enough for them that we killed an enemy who attacked us, they want to kill everyone who thinks he was right to do so. That is the road to the endless war. And this moment is the best opportunity for a stopping point we're ever going to see. It's an absolutely vital point. That's why it matters; not because it reduces the risk of terrorism, but because if the global war on terror is ever going to end, now is the moment. I dearly hope these victory rallies turn into anti-war rallies. From the couple military families I know through Warcraft, that's definitely my sense of the mood. They're done. They hated Bin Laden, not just for the attacks, but for everything they suffered from the wars the attacks triggered.

At work, the admins send emails to everyone ratting you out when it's your birthday. It's interesting who responds, basically, it's friends, people I've done stuff for recently, and sales people. There also seems to be a lower response rate from data managers than analysts. I should probably work on learning to pay attention to people and stuff. I never respond to these emails.

Ooh! For a while I've been trying to think of a conspiracy theory I believe, and I just found one! I think unknown powerful people protected Whitey Bulger. I have no evidence, except that he was rich and politically connected, and didn't get caught. This is exactly the same reasoning pattern that leads people down various rabbit holes.

I am irrationally moved by the thought that Christopher Hitchens outlived Osama Bin Laden after all. I hope he has enough time left to write about it. This means so many different things to so many different people. For me, it's a relief: that what we have done was sufficient: that our society has survived 10 years, that no more freedom needed to be bargained away: that he failed to turn us into what he thought we were. That September 11th didn't change the world as much as it felt like it might, at the time. And I think this is why young crowds posing for the cameras seem to be getting it wrong, to me. That they didn't really feel the fear 10 years ago, that maybe the world will no longer be able to work the way it did before: that the power available to individuals was going to break the notions of equality and freedom. While he was out there, there was the constant fear that he would inspire us to turn the world back in order to get him.

Why television gravitates towards dreck: people who think like this. That the Office was co-opted into something that could have 'a very special episode' depresses me. The Office, while unbearable, was a masterpiece of embarrassment comedy. It was the cleanest, starkest show I'd ever seen. Dwight was like nothing on TV. It was the evolution of Fawlty Towers. That someone could celebrate it's decline into goofiness... bah. They have no soul. They may even be right. TV, perhaps, is meant to gently amuse people, not sear them. But that's tragic.

The hardest part of being management is decoupling my sense of self-worth from the amount of actual work I get done.

Alan Khazai is running for Senate again. I suppose I should be grateful to have a candidate I like, I just wish it was one with a hope.

Aha! Donald Trump is a 2nd generation tycoon! It all makes much more sense now. His father sounds like a reasonable human being. Now I no longer have to think, well, he can't be quite as stupid as he comes across, which is a relief. (I don't believe being 'self-made' indicates much in the way of virtue, but I do believe it does imply not being an out-and-out fool)

Felix Salmon wants to know: Why do we have a debt ceiling? Contains an interesting link to a post from 2006, when the idiocy was on the other foot. Why is 'do you want the US government to default?' a hard question?
