Entanglement: quite pretty, and addictive much the way that solitaire is. My record is 344.

As a lifelong compulsive NPR listener, I would be happy for them to lose their federal funding, primarily because I think federal funding is at least as corrupting for a news organization than commercial sponsorship, and presently they have both problems. I don't like that NPR cares when it makes Senators grumble.

I'm utterly certain that the phone menu woman at the IRS also does the menu system for our corporate teleconferencing. She always sounds like she's suffering stoically along with you through the hold music. (I mistyped the account information: I think it should sort itself out, but calling just in case)

Just saw Beauty and the Beast for the first time. It has many virtues! It made me wonder why there aren't any animated Gilbert and Sullivan musicals. No, not quite that. I can see that. It makes me wish Gilbert and Sullivan had been able to make animated musicals. This got close, it it's crueler and weirder moments. The Gaston number, in particular. And now, researching this post, I learn that Menken/Ashman did Little Shop of Horrors, which makes total sense. Seriously disappointingly, Ashman died before Beauty and the Beast came out, at age 40, after writing approximately all the good lyrics in Aladdin.

I forgot the Making Work Pay Tax Credit, but the IRS apparently fixed it for me, so that's all right.

there are 3 levels of reference as humor. It can be an hidden treat inside something that stands on it's own. Gulliver's Travels holds up fine without footnotes, though I'm sure it sparkled more at the time. It can be a requirement for comprehension, as with today's XKCD, which is less of a sin that it was before the internet, particularly when it drops the search terms you need to get it. It's the third kind, the sort that has no content, that exists simply to create the feeling of being on the inside, that strikes me as inherently unpleasant.

I suppose I should be glad that there are cases like Charlie Sheen in the news, so that the general public's ideas of mental illness aren't entirely shaped by shooters. I'm not, but I should be.

I am glad the ACLU submitted a brief supporting Westboro's right to troll. I wish I didn't have to dig to find anything about it. I'm sure the stories they have up there on the front page are better fundraisers, but it feels like cowardice. They're the only charity of the kind I support exactly because of things like this, where civil liberties and democracy are at odds. Maybe they'll put something up later.
Edit: they did: I was impatient. Yay ACLU!

The optimal solution to not being able to find the phone on your desk because of all the papers is probably not actually to put the phone on top of the papers.

I had remembered the Bicycle Thief as a nice light cheerful movie, and somehow it is. It's just fundamentally lighthearted. It's playful, the way it all fits together, and the way it taunts and tortures it's protagonist.
