That's kind of awesome. The latest Miles Vorkosigan novel includes a CD with all the books in the series in (edited) HTML, rich text, and all the ebook formats, and full permission to share them, along with all her speeches, interviews, and essays. Maybe the future of books I thought was coming when I was reading Orson Scott Card novels pre-publication on America Online is coming after all. Or maybe Tor is just weird.

I dislike the vague sense of guilt that comes attached to every fish that dies in the aquarium. Both my Clown Plecos are dead. The were 5 1/2 years old. They had no particular role in the aquarium, and I don't know what killed them. I don't think they starved, but who knows, their stick is almost completely gone, maybe they needed a fresh one. The tank is now 9 Rasbora, 3 silver dollars, an algae eater, and two sickly burmese loaches. I don't know what to do about the loaches: they did really well until they drove the snails to extinction. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but what? Did I let the algae get too established? Not enough water changes? Not enough filter changes? Too acidic? Wrong food? Humbug.

Things that don't belong in the Charles, Part II. There is no evidence that a seal and an alligator were in league with one another.

Local Unitarian contributions to american letters, 20th century edition: the headquarters of the John Birch Society was in Belmont, on Concord Ave, until the founder and chief crazy died (and inventor of the Sugar Daddy!), at which point it was moved to Wisconsin. I can't find any evidence of which Unitarian church he attended.

If you haven't seen Hoop Dreams, absolutely watch it first. No, I don't care if you don't like basketball. But if you have, No Crossover is generally worth watching. It fills in from the other side, of what happens with the kid who is magical enough that the system doesn't let him fail, but doesn't let him be, either, about what happens when everyone cares. It isn't about Iverson at all, really, it's about the effect he had on his hometown, about his wake.
Professional sports may be the closest we come to a strict meritocracy, certainly more so than business or academics, which is why it's such a magnet for people looking to get off the bottom. It also makes it a good place to see the bizarre injustice of rewarding merit, but also the tremendous, stupid waste of human potential inherent in not doing so.

A good use of federal hate crime laws, just down the road from where I was born. Though I'd rather the murder acquittal had somehow been appealed instead. The fact that it became important during the 2nd trial what obscenities they used as they kicked a man to death is itself obscene. Surely non-racist murders covered up by local police need a path of appeal as well. Though I suppose it's true that some murders are more important than others, because of their wider political implications, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Right-ho. Back to kittens and tranquil lakes shortly.
