Battle Cry of Freedom is so good that I'm going to have to save this list and read the other stuff on it. Really well written, eye-opening, with a unstated core of fury to it.

This is an excellent example of how people misuse the doctrine of presumption of innocence outside the courts: it turns into an assumption of innocence, and from there to blanket immunity from any consequences, or even judgement, for evil actions that happen to also be illegal. Courts have the ability to take life and liberty, and so as protection, we make them err on the side of caution. The Catholic Church thankfully has no longer has such powers, for it to err on the side of 'caution' here by voluntarily adopting the procedural limitations we place on the courts, if taken at face value, is a particularly malignant form of wilful stupidity. Please don't give them, or any organization associated with them, money.

More awesome people named Theodore from Lexington: Theodore Parker, who openly defied the fugitive slave law and who said "I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice." I wish Unitarians still talked more about a higher law with both this humility and this sense of it's importance. Maybe they do. Maybe I should go listen to them some week.

It turns out Theodore Weld founded a school in Lexington at one point. Yet another famous resident! Here's a landmark I want to go see: Charles Ponzi's mansion.

Reading Battle Cry of Freedom by James Mcpherson. I'm only in chapter 2, but it's excellent. I'd never realized that Mormonism was the greatest and most successful of the 19th century utopian movements, but it makes a lot of sense, once you do. In general, I am shocked by my ignorance of american history. For example, what I knew about the Mexican-American war was encompassed entirely by the line "from the halls of montezuma". But the reason for this post is to remind myself that I want to read Theodore Weld's American Slavery as It Is.

Here we go again: here's the stream gage. We're already 6" ahead of average since the beginning of the year, everything is still soaked, and it's supposed to keep raining until wednesday.

One little advertised advantage of the Kindle over paper books is that it is much easier to read when you're covered with wrestling kittens.

A: male. pale orange with tabby markings and white paws. Runt of the litter. Falls over. Previously named Merry.
B: male. orange with white snout. Fluffy. likes wrestling. Previously named Doyle.
C: male. Orange. white paws, no tabby markings. Climber. Previously named Pippen.
D: male. Orange, no white. makes eye contact. friendly. previously named Cole.
E: male. Orange with white face and paws. fluffy. immediately climbs on me and starts digging looking for some sort of warm nest. chews on everything. dreams of chewing on things. Previously named Frodo.
F: female. gray/black with white patches and paws, orange forehead. Fluffy and gorgeous. serious climber. Attacked my beard. Previously named Blackberry.
Tomorrow when there's better light I'll weigh and photograph them all. (I have a week off! and kittens! It should be therapeutic.)
(updated with more distinguishing information. D, E and F are the most coordinated, which, for a month old kitten, means they can basically steer.)
I think I may rename them, just because I can, maybe after the Valar. Frodo, forsooth.
(updated: now leaning towards Drone Club members or Austen novel heroes)
