I really do think the snow is taunting the children this year.  I don't think we've had snow on a school day yet. _

Okay, that was fascinating.  I just got a call from a survey company.  The last question on the screen was whether I blog or comment on blogs about politics.   I said yes, and they ended it.  I couldn't work it out: why would that be a question on a likely voter screen?  But then I realized, it wouldn't be, but if they're doing push-polling and trying to keep it quiet, it's a clever question. _

I can't get over how funny it is that the TV is telling me that I shouldn't trust Martha Coakley on the authority of my freshman roommate.  Um, it's funnier if you know him.   Not because he's dishonest: if anything, from what I've seen he's an actual reporter, and I'm sure his sources are good. It's that he had such a talent for saying what people wanted to hear. And I don't trust Martha Coakley, the issue of her trustworthiness is completely irrelevant. _

In Bill the Conqueror, 1924, Wodehouse has a con-man claiming to be a eugenicist and citing George Bernard Shaw.  It's rather disorienting stuff.  Early Wodehouse is very similar to late Wodehouse, except his world hasn't yet come completely unmoored from reality.  It's just puzzling that was born the same year as Picasso and Kemal Ataturk.  I should like to read something about the history of eugenics in the early 20th century, except then I'd be reading something depressing.  But as someone who believes in reform, progress and so on, I really probably should confront the vile impractical enthusiasms of past reformers more than I have. _

Sullivan on Coakley:  "Think John Kerry. And then lower your standards a few thousand feet."  I was just thinking how this election cycle made me feel better about Kerry.

Listening to the Senate debate.   Absolutely infuriating.  Coakley is running away on the torture issue and trying to make it about abortion.  The libertarian tea partier is the only one saying anything coherent.   Wrong, mind you, but coherent.  Coakley is an awful candidate.  I'm sure she loses votes every time her TV ads run.  They're all awful candidates. _

The Oxford Illustrated Dickens arrived today.  I picked up Hard Times.  The introduction is written by someone named Dingle Foot.  I of course, immediately thought, no you aren't, no one with a name like that would come within 10 miles of a Dickens novel, but in fact he was.   Sir Dingle Mackintosh Foot. He confidently predicted that the inverted snob would be an unknown phenomenon by the end of the 20th century. I suppose they're probably rarer than they used to be. _
