Smoked ham* baked with creamy cabbage and mustard seeds
or
Crabmeat* in spicy broth of star anise, Thai fish sauce*, ginger, chilies and cilantro
or
Vegetarian saffron flan with asparagus and Aleppo pepper-pink peppercorn harissa
or
Vegan fava beans, spring onions, fiddleheads and fennel braised with green almonds in mulberry glaze

Ixtapa has a 4 piece mariachi band on thursday nights. This rather alters the experience. On the one hand, it is rather louder than is optimal. On the other hand, I like trumpets and Guitarróns. Also, my new theory is that the chef is allergic to peppers.

Too late! They've closed the skyfari at the Bronx Zoo. I have vivid early memories of that, the monorail, and the camel ride.

My corporate masters, god bless them, have a new set of slogans including "Intelligent Information" and "Right Here, Right Now". (everybody sing!) Jesus Jones aside, the intelligent information thing is vaguely worryng. Has Tim Berners-Lee got to us? Am I going to have to do XML based reporting? A brief search of the annual report turns up no allusions to my market segment.
"Intelligent information is self-aware: it understands what it is about, whom it is for, where it came from and what it's meant to do. It knows how to communicate these things about itself to others, whether those others are human beings or other intelligent agents."
I mean, good grief. I'm not particularly self-aware by that definition, let alone my reporting. _

At the clients offices, the janitor, who kindly showed me where to find insulated cups, was wielding a backpack vacuum cleaner, which seems like a completely fantastic idea. They appear not to be marketed towards non-professionals, though, I wonder why not.

Back from Ann Arbor and Omaha. Iowa is really beautiful from the air. Throughout the area around Council Bluffs, the farms are terraced, which makes it a bit like looking at a contour map. My brief visit to Omaha made it appear to consist nearly entirely of strip malls. There's the old city, by the river, but it just keeps moving west: there's nothing to constrain sprawl, so the city crawls across the landscape. I was there for a training, which went well enough: the people were friendly, and it was useful for a fair percentage of them.

There are roots in our drainpipe, dear liza, dear liza. We discovered this when the bathwater found its way out the laundry drain and onto the basement floor. The gentleman with the long spinning cable was kind enough to trim them back. Now we apparently face the choice between trying to have the front bank dug up and the pipe fixed, and having people routinely prune our plumbing.

I seem to have bronchitis, however, I haven't had any sort of fever, just the cough and the wheezing. If it keeps up for another week I'll go to the doctor.

We have a rake! And a hose! And a completely absurd number of leaves! Also, I got rid of all the horrible dimmer switches. Next: the chandeliers.

Aquarium filter is horribly loud. Have tried cleaning it, tightening all the hoses, spilling water everywhere, nothing seems to help. I suspect it of being air pockets, but it could also be the impeller.
