Fallows on Michael Crichton. I think of Crichton as the high water mark of the modern, professional novel. Insofar as there is a science to writing, his are the best I've read. My favorite, from this point of view, was The Great Train Robbery. At one point, after discovering him, I thought maybe I'd like thrillers, and tried Clancy, etc. Not so much.

We got there when the polls opened, with the rest of the yuppies, and it only took 25 minutes. It was rather confused, because each precinct has it's own line, and how long it takes depends largely on how long it takes you to realize that.
