WiiWare! I am totally doing this. My air hockey paddle breeding game would go wonderfully with the Wii.

Edit: or perhaps not. Looks like you still have to get a dev kit, and that's not available to hobbyists. But maybe I'll go back to working on it one day. Just as soon as I get the hang of this life thing. _

"I think, therefore I listen." Actual tagline for WBUR, my NPR station, as they say. I'm just sort of stunned. There's a certain compete lack of something or other about NPR sometimes. _

They make automatic window openers that regulate the temperature of greenhouses, by opening and closing depending on the outside temperature. I want them for my apartment. I don't understand why they aren't standard among ecopeople. Wouldn't the save massive amounts in heating and cooling? I mean, yes, rain, and burglars would both have to be accounted for, but still. _

Elizabeth Island Cygnets 6/23

Okay, equal time, here's the other family of swans. When I came back, these were curled up together on the bank, with their heads tucked in at identical angles, and when I started paddling away, all 3 heads popped up. It was rather excessive.

spy pond oak cygnets 6/23

I lied. This one is adorable enough to justify it's blurryness.

I'm not sure how old they are, but they were still in their eggs last Sunday. Or some of them were? how well coordinated are eggs, anyway?

The male swan is just out of the frame to the left, making menacing noises at me. He seriously objected to the autofocus lamp. _

kayak paddle

Much of the appeal of kayaking at dusk is staring at the constantly shifting geometry of the water. Trying to photograph the mind-bending ones never works, though, so here is a nice simple easy to interpret one. In a similar vein, I forgot to mention the flight of hundreds of starlings, or the blue heron flying in front of the moon.

About half an hour after sunset, every bird seems to decide it needs to be somewhere else. _

black capped night heron

Dusk really isn't the time to try to take pictures with a camera without ISO controls from a moving kayak. It is, however, the time to see night herons. Also, the Spy Pond Oak Swans are off the nest, with 6 cygnets. The Elizabeth Island swans are living behind the yellow house at the end of the street, and still have 3 left.

The water was still enough that you could see disturbed patches of water where fish were eating flies.

I investigated the newly abandoned nest by the Spy Pond Oak. Both nests are massive piles of broken reeds, maybe a 18 inches above the water, and 4 feet in diameter. I was hoping for egg fragments, but all I found were a few feathers and rather a lot of droppings.

I've got some cygnet pictures, but they're all either insufficiently adorable or too blurry. this one only makes it because it's an Officially Exciting Bird.
