I like Dimetapp. I do not like making all the same mistakes I made last week at work, in the same order.

Yay! Not that we'll be in the market for a house for another couple years. Amazing how real estate stories went from Great Investments, bubble is nonsense, buy now!!! to Great Bargains, buy now!!! Newspaper real estate news coverage, at least local coverage, appears to be entirely corrupt. Not that this is entirely surprising, since all the ad revenue comes from real estate agents.

Last night we watched Gandhi, and I spend most of the night and morning reading the orwell essays ZLN so kindly sent, so I'm feeling rather abstracted at the moment. I can never seem to fully engage in political thought anymore. I've grown too meek to think with authority about it. Being more or less content and comfortable, I have no force of my own, and I've grown fat. The only way I can experience the delightful breeze of philosophical thought is by exposing myself to an ideological wind, and swaying gently back and forth in it.
However, the fun of Orwell isn't even primarily in his morose hegalian nightmares of the inevitability of fascism, but rather his window into pre-war britain. In particular, anyone who has thought at length about Harry Potter, and its entire dissimilarity to Tolkien/Gigex fantasy should read his essay on Boys' Weeklies. In the book it is followed by a delightful reply written by the astonishing Charles Hamilton, who wrote most of them, but I can't find it online.

I'm now up to 8 financial institutions: E*Trade (checking, closing), BoA (checking), ING Direct (savings), MBNA (backup credit card), Chase (credit card), Putnam (401k), Fidelity (ESPP) and an unknown party (Student loans). I feel this is too many.

I am feeling thoroughly vindicated in not going to work today. At times, I can't see the houses across the road. Warm and smug, that's what I am. Erika went to school, but got back just before it really started coming down.

Do the raging street battles over Christmas vs Holiday indicate that our society has no actual problems? My take is that people should be allowed to wish people whatever they like. Anyone getting offended on either side needs to find better outlets for their aggression. Indignation is a reprehensible hobby.

Martin's ill-conceived experimentations have made me realize what I need to do to make peace with my slow cooker after it burnt the caramelized onions, leaving me with a house full of beautiful onion smells but not a bite of french onion soup. Tea eggs!
