I've got into making sure all the pictures are trimmed into small-number ratios. I don't know if I quite believe in it, but it helps make what is otherwise a very arbitrary decision easier; not to mention working out how to keep the ratio fixed when scaling.

I'll break down and get Photoshop one day. I can't hold Acrobat against Adobe forever. I mean, people seem to love Photoshop. It's interface can't be as completely awful as Acrobat, can it? Does anyone know if Elements is acceptable for playing with digital photographs, or is it simply a gateway editor? _

The 5 preceding pictures were all taken on saturday at Trustom Pond, a salt pond on the Atlantic coast. We also saw what looked awfully like an otter bounding down the trail in front of us, and what could have been an otter slide. _

I know that having an excuse to go outside and relax isn't a good enough reason to take up smoking, but it does appeal sometimes. If only offices would ban crunchy snacks indoors so I could go outside and eat popcorn now and then. _

While in New Hampshire, I'm staying at a Marriott Courtyard. I gave in to inertia and ate at the hotel cafe for dinner. I recognized the bread rolls from when we got catering leftovers at SJCA. Creepy. I think I recognized the chicken and rice soup as well, but I wouldn't swear to it. Also, grilling is a horrible thing to do to salmon. _

The place where the umbra jumps halfway across the moon is where the cat got on the wrong side of the railing, and I pulled him back through, tossed him inside, slammed the door and realized it was locked, so after contemplating bricks and french doors briefly, popped the screen out of the stairway window, climb in, go and ring the landlords doorbell and get the master key, climb back out the stairway window and unlock my balcony door (I'd chained the main door). Typing this up just now reminded me that I'd left the screen open, so I went into the stairwell, closed it, and found that the main door had locked behind me, so had to climb back onto the porch again. _

All gosling pictures were taken on one particular afternoon in Ann Arbor, when I tormented goslings without pity or remorse, and was very nearly killed and eaten by angry geese. Geese do goose-step, by the way. Goslings also have a panic noise they make when cornered which summons large, angry geese.

It appears that dental associations regularly sue state governments in an attempt to increase dental coverage in medicaid. I'm about to start work gathering data for the state in one of these cases. I hate legislation through litigation. Dentists have always stuggled, though, because they aren't part of the AMA. Since Blue Cross was created by doctors, dentists weren't part of it; and since all health care plans are based on Blue Cross, they still aren't part of the main bearaucracy. They have a entirely different and incompatable system of claims forms, codes, and so on. The only explanation I can fabricate is that dentistry started off as a trade rather than a profession, due to the obvious and important nature of pulling teeth. _
