"Welcome to Vietnam, Mr. President. Sorry you didn't go when you had the chance."

I'm proud to say I voted for Max Cleland. Perhaps (if he hadn't lost to a draft-dodging asshole who questioned the patriotism of a man who gave two legs and one arm for his country) his vote could have been the one that saved us from this mess. _

Last night I dreamed that I was trying to explain to President Bartlett that he didn't need to make a database to keep track of his daughters because he only has three, and if he insisted on making the database, it wouldn't need to have a "kidnapped?" checkbox because they're not going to get kidnapped that often...

Perhaps, tomorrow, I will not work on my database or fall asleep in front of the tv. _

While I was at the ESA meeting in Savannah, I worked off the cost of attendance by working AV at a few sessions. I was assigned to those sessions and, while they were not ones that I would have chosen to attend, for the most part they were pretty interesting. The one exception was a session devoted to research in Biosphere 2. You may remember Biosphere 2 as the place that crazy people tried to live to somehow simulate life on earth or something. After that was a collosal failure (among other things, they almost killed themselves due to lake of oxygen and build-up of nitrogen in the air), the crazy rich guy who built the place turned it into a research facility which he has been leasing to Columbia University.
Biosphere 2 was not designed as a scientific facility and, despite the hype, doesn't do a particularly good job of simulating "Biosphere 1". One of the biggest problems is that the glass does not allow the transmittance of UV light, which, among other things, prevents the presents of many insects, including bees. The only thing it has going for it as a research facility is the ability to control ambient temperature, air pressure, humidity, and air chemistry. So, I listened to 4 hours of experiments manipulating one or more of these factors in a stand of pine trees (with few to no invertebrates or microbes in the air or soil) and using them to make predictions about global climate change. And it was just bad. So, I was not surprised to hear that Columbia is ending its work in Biosphere 2. _

I think I remember when Paul Hill shot Dr. Britton and James Barrett outside of a women's clinic in Pensacola in 1994, that it was mentioned in the St. John's Reporter that Barrett, the volunteer escort, was a Johnny. I can't find much information about the victims (everybody just wants to talk about the murderer who was murdered by the state last night). Does anybody else remember this? _

John Agresto, former president of SJC-SF, has been named Chief Advisor on Higher Education for Iraq. I have no idea what this means, or what to think of it, but I thought I'd share. The only online story I've seen so far is in Chronicle of Higher Education (which I can read, and you probably can too if you're on a college campus, but it's probably not worth subscribing to unless you're looking for a job in academia). _

I've bought plane tickets for the Stream Restoration meeting at UMD in October. I feel bourgeois for flying to DC twice in a year, especially considering how many times I've made the drive, but my car is a lot older now and somebody else is paying for it. Besides, my enjoyment of our meetings in Santa Barbara is pretty bourgeois as well. So, anyway, I will be in College Park October 9-13 if anybody in the DC/Annapolis area might want to be nice to me and get me out of College Park. _

There's a new student in our office. To be fair and balanced, the Onion article is not true of at least one Republican. Governor Bob Riley of Alabama wants to cut taxes on the poor and raise them on the rich to fix Alabama's terrible public schools. And he wants to do all this because he's a Christian and he thinks that's what his faith compels him to do. His leading opposition--why the Christian Coalition, of course, who much prefer their "Christian" Republicans to behave as in the Onion article. . _

Republicans Introduce Economic Equality Bill For Fun Of Shooting It Down

WASHINGTON, DC—Republicans in the House of Representatives proposed H.R. 2093: the Economic Equality Initiative, with the express purpose of shooting it down "just for kicks" Tuesday. "H.R. 2093 will level the economic playing field, spreading the wealth among the rich and poor," said Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-TX), visibly fighting back snickers. "We must pass this bill to stop the fat cats from getting fatter while the average Joe struggles to make ends meet. Also, I'm the Queen of Bavaria." Following 10 minutes of uproarious laughter, the congressmen stepped out of the chamber to smoke cigars lit with a bill that would allocate $115 million to clean up hazardous waste sites. _
