Why do I get the feeling that if I ever did this I would feel immensely guilty afterwards? The desire to stick it to telemarketers is so strong, a counterscript like this is hard to resist.

The title I've been using for the Top 10 favorites compilation in my head is Heart of the Blogmass, it needs a title other than 'Remi's thing' which makes me distinctly uneasy, or a more generic title, which seems dull. This isn't an official title, if you have a better title in mind I'd be happy to use it.

I read PvP everyday, and every once in a while I wonder, "Why am I reading this?" Invariably, Scott Kurtz immediately runs a cartoon that makes me wonder why I wonder.

As it seems that finding server space for all our Top 10's is unlikely, we need a way to distribute the CD's, which means through the post (argh). If everyone sends me a copy of their Top 10/posts the files somewhere online, I will compile the Top 10 CD and send it out with the complete liner notes.

For those who are interested but missed it, Lawrence Lessig has posted his thoughts on the Eldred v. Ashcroft oral argument, a case that may decide whether Congress should have the ability to extend copyright indefinitely, or at all.

I've been reading a book called 1001 Greatest Rock and R&B Singles by Dave Marsh, and I thought it might be amusing if folks on the blogmass posted our Top 10 or so favorite songs, complete with paragraphs explaining why. Then I saw that Martin has posted a thing for a new Blogmass CD, and it occurs to me that we could do both. Each person chooses 10 or 20 songs that are important or interesting to them, writes the aforementioned little paragraphs, then we compile them onto a CD or two, and distribute the CDs and the notes as a nice little package. This should have a different effect than a mix CD, which is shooting for continuity in form, and be an interesting little writing project as well.

Just a quick update on the recording project. I finished the final vocals and rough mixes today, I'm meeting with the band tomorrow for comments and suggestions on the final mixes, and it should be done sometime Tuesday. Then I'll finally reveal some solid info, well solid info other than it took this long to squeeze out 22 minutes of music!

Reading Tim's entry about his new iBook, I realize that I never named my tower, I just call it 'The Mac' which is pretty boring. 'Macintosh HD' sits there like the lump of evil text it is beneath the Hard Drive icon. So what should I name the old girl?

Warren Ellis's reaction to Firefly is very similar to mine. I can't find it on the web, so I'll just quote it here:
FIREFLY started badly. I saw the original long pilot, and it was
troubled. The screened, shorter new pilot moved faster but shared
many of its problems. It's not paced well, and ideas that looked
good on paper drop dead on the screen. But when it actually
ups and moves, it's clever and funny. The spaceship captain, we
are told frequently in the pilot by other characters, is a pragmatic
man. But that's not the same as seeing it, and we have to wait
till the end of the pilot for that. In a gunfight, someone is hiding
behind her horse to shoot at him. He thinks for a second. Grimaces.
Then just shoots the horse. He resolves a hostage situation in
a similar way that has echoes of the famous shoots-the-swordsman
scene in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. The single moment of
true brilliance in the screened pilot comes at the end, too -- but
the screened pilot IS better, tighter and with sharper dialogue. The
second episode chokes a few times, and I personally thought the
pacing was well out on the last fifteen minutes, but the actors are
more comfortable -- especially Nathan Fillion as the captain, who
seems to be beginning to inhabit the man and the boat. I hear
the third episode is a further improvement. I'm impressed by the special
effects, which are inventive and intelligent and real.
Industry pundits are claiming it's dead in the water already, but
provided Fox are prepared to hold fire a while, FIREFLY may well
yet happen. It's not a perfect show, but it's nice to hear good
dialogue.

I'm back from my 'computer not being in my house' situation, and of all the things I missed about my computer set up, tabbed browsing in Mozilla was the most noticeable.
"But what," you may ask, "Have you been doing for the last week that required your computer to not be perched in its usual place?"
I was recording an album with a local band, Fat Seth. I wasn't actually playing any instruments, but I was wielding my mighty Pro Tools skills to help out a band that didn't have the means to record in a proper studio. I guess I was being a 'Producer'. We're just about done, and I will post some mp3's sometime soon. From the rough mixes I've been doing, it sounds pretty damn good.

I've felt boxed in by the lack of options and interactivity of the Rockstar Game for a while now. It was fun, but now all I can do is raise my Ability score and release albums, everything else has been conquered. There's no real strategy or goals left, just the empty hope that if I invest 100 points I'll get 7 or 8 points of Ability in return. If The Game Neverending is as interesting, and more importantly as open-ended, as it sounds, it might be what I craved in the RSG. I've signed up for an alpha spot, but who knows how useful I'll be?

Tonight we (just me and the inimitable Dave Wisdom) played with local bands Tangerine, The Emergency, and Fat Seth. It was just a little house party, mostly band people and their friends, very comfortable. Most people sat out on the porch and listened, peering in from the doorway. The true troopers sat on the couches and chairs in the living room where the bands played. Earplugs were a requirement for couch-sitting. Also, it was BYOB, so the drunkeness was at a minimum and the crowd was quite mellow, although by no means unresponsive.
We went second, after the Classic Rock-tinged Tangerine. Early technical troubles on 'Little Green Sponge' forced us to ditch it as our opening song, and we trooped on into the (very) early Talking Heads song 'Sugar on My Tongue,' for which I tried to up the Sex and Danger quotient in the room, and succeded. We tore into the feedback-laden 'Indie Rock Bottom' which brought folks closer to the door and to their feet, also generating some laughter and smiles.
We weren't ending all that tight, and Dave was having some problems with the kick pedal on the bass so I launched into a guitar-only version of 'Lake of Fire' hoping that would calm him down. That went over surprisingly well, giving me that warm feeling that happens when you hit a slow groove at the right time.
After that, it was time for Little Green Sponge, which brought the Rock back into the room, and then we hyper-speeded Psycho Killer. The back-and-forth between Dave and I, which had been going on all evening then broke into full gear for our new song 'Our Band is Going to Break Up Because of this Song', which our chance to yell obscenities at each other and air the dirty laundry, so to speak. The execution was far from perfect, but the passion was there.
We closed out with 'I Hate Sex', which ended with me screaming 'Sex Sex Sex Sex Sex Sex Sex!' at the top of my lungs and Dave pounding the skins. We may have been a mildly-proficient guitarist and drummer duo, but we held our own tonight, and people bought into the fun of our performance. Dave saw the possibilities of performing as Pine Nut, and I was really happy that it went so well. We'll be terrorizing another club or house party soon.

So tonight I'll be playing the first public show with my newly christened band Pine Nut. It'll be a short 7 song set with a preponderence of originals mixed with early Talking Heads songs. I've promised Dave, drummer ordinaire and only other member playing tonight, that I won't brain him with the guitar over what he says during "Our Band is Gonna Break Up Over this Song". Should be a wild evening, perhaps even a report will be forthcoming when I get back.

Hm, it appears the Modern Tales spin-off site Adventure Strips has launched. This site is, true to its name, mostly adventure strips. There seems to be a lot of crime and fantasy stuff. It looks nice, but feels sort of like the c-list of comicbook artists, guys who had the chops, but whose personal style became unpopular. I can't say it interests me a whole lot now that I've seen it, but it's on my taskba r and I'll read it for a few weeks before making a serious decision on way or the other. Another weird thing is that none of the strips update more than once a week and they all seem to be half-pages.

Even though some might find its packaged cynicism and pseudo-hipsterism offensive, I really liked Daria. It was the last MTV show that celebrated intelligence to any degree. Plus, it had the world's most dissonant themesong.

Warren Ellis' latest creation is Ordering Comics, a monthly list of what the editors of Ordering Comics think is the best stuff coming out in the near future. (One of the recommendations for November is Shonen Jump, you can get 12 issues for 20 bucks if you order it through Toriyama's World)
