Okay, I bought De Profundis today, and it's the most frustrating RPG book I've ever read. It's dense, poorly organized, poorly written, and waaaaay too Hardcore Lovecraft Fan to be playable by the group that seems interested. I have gleaned a sense of gameplay from it, however, and feel that we could run an effective game _without_ everyone having to buy this God Damn book. So Mike, Deborah, Moss, Mirabai, and Andrew, I'll be send out an e-mail soon with more details, as well as the rules we'll be playing under. These rules will be relatively light and more for the sake of organization than moderating play. If anyone else wants to join up, now is the time. _

So, this De Profundis game seems like a cool idea. Moss and I discussed it, and it seems like actually doing it through the mail, with real letters, would be kind of interesting. Anyone want to play a slow RPG through snailmail? _

For all you Mac gamers out there, Ambrosia Software has released the newest version of the classic Escape Velocity, it's called Escape Velocity: Nova and it takes the space-faring/trading/RPG game to new heights. If you can download the 76 meg demo (which is the shareware-crippled version of the entire game), do so, and enjoy the splendor! _

A couple weekends ago we decided we needed a poster for the wall in the living room, which was quite barren. Now, I'm not the biggest person for wall hangings in the world (the things I like don't make great posters for the most part . . . which is a totally different entry), and so the sum total of my additions to the wall adornents to the large downstairs room is a small framed drawing of Times Square in New York that my mother gave.

So we went to a poster shop, and after surprisingly little agony decided on this really neat color Japanese print by Hokusai (know for that wave poster that was so popular in the eighties and early nineties) of two guys crossing a bridge. It's the greatest poster I've ever had on a wall. The paper stock is thick and has a little texture to it, the color reproduction is beautiful, right down to the imperfections in the original, and the wall hanger we got for it rules. It's the sort of picture you look at, and stories just flow into your head, details appear, and you can dream waking. Man, I love that poster. _

I watched Topsy Turvy last night and it occurs to me that Jim Broadbent's Gilbert is the worst aspect of a collaborative project personified. He sees the actors and musicians as soiling his precious stories, and is barely able to contain his contempt for their work. During particularly frustrating periods of Lysistrata and Don Juan in Hell, I could be heard exclaiming, "This production would be going perfectly if it weren't for the fucking actors!"
Now, I'm not so conceited as to believe that the actors held any higher an opinion of me during these frustrating times (or, in some cases, at any time), but it points to a problem with collaborative art: everyone wants their say and thinks their opinion deserves to be shouted the loudest and then accepted without question. For theater to be successful, though, it can't just be automatons running the director's instructions, and it can't be an anarchy of actors all trying to out-do one another in an orgy of egos and broken limbs with the director sitting in the wings trying to decide which plants to use and where to put them.
There has to be a middle ground to work out differences. Although there is a balance of power that can swing to the director or the actor, within limits, it needs to be carefully tended so as not to drain the energy of the cast and crew in petty squabbling. I'm not self aware enough to be certain, but I don't think I shared Gilbert's utter lack of the ability to copromise. This fundamental flaw and akwardness at sharing his vision, however, makes Broadbent's Gilbert a lot of fun to watch, as he surely sees any deviation from his minds-eye-view as a catastrophe, but he would be a demon to work with in life. I suppose a prodigious talent allows for certain . . . quirks. _

So, Liz and I pretty much did twelve hours of work related to her stream surveys. By the end of the day sun and fatigue had taken their toll and we were thinking of ways to put the word 'Butt' into various Star Wars names. Some of the more amusing names:

Buttress Leia
Those lovable furry creatures, the Buttoks!
The Death Butt
Emperor Palpabutt
Admiral AckButt
Butt Butthopper's master, Yobutt
Jabba the Butt
Boba Butt
Obi Butt Kenobi
and so on . . . _

Blade II would have been so good if they had just picked a villain and run with it. It took half the movie to set up the status quo, and when the actual bad guys finally show up again (after much mistaken identity, backroom dealing, and a mysterious appearance at the beginning of the movie), their coolness factor was diminished because they appeared after Ninja Vampires. Not even crazy head-splitting mandibles can compete with Ninja Vampires. The WWF Wrestling moves interpolated into the Kung Fu sequences were pleasantly bizarre, as was the new 'Vampire Death' effect. Other than that, and a few inspired running gags, the movie was overlong and a bit incoherent. _

While driving home from Decatur yesterday, we passed a car that had been pulled over by the police. The car had a family in it.
