WARNING: LINKS IN THIS ENTRY CONTAIN PICTURES OF SNAKES AND SPIDERS
So today we went down to the extreme south of Louisiana and helped build a porch. In the process we saw an Argiope spider of some sort. Perhaps Argiope trifasciata. The underside was what we could see and it was exactly as in Ms. Wigney's photo. My sister got a really good shot with her good quality camera. I got a shot with my cameraphone, but I don't know if we'll be able to see the spider in it. Time will tell. We also saw and ended up killing two black widows with large egg sacs, and one brown widow, which is a spider we didn't even know existed until today. I had goosebumps and chills several times even while sweating and burning in the sun. Phobias are strange.
We also determined that the snake we saw in the backyard of the house we gutted (in St. Bernard Parish) was in fact a Water Moccasin or Cottonmouth. It was really pretty, but of course we didn't go near it, and are now very glad indeed.

I should explain that the work we were doing to today was the tail end of a gutting job. The lady who owns the house has returned to town to be near her mother, and has no place to stay starting tonight, so she'll be sleeping in that house. You may have noticed in the pictures that Caprina Lynn was wearing a dust mask. We all were while working there because the inside of the place was full of foulness. I can't imagine sleeping there, but that was the best option that the homeowner had. Tomorrow they are planning to pressure wash the entire inside, then after it dries they can start on re-insulating and hanging drywall. Luckily for the owner all the doors and all but one of the windows have already been replaced. That's a good start. I will try to take more pictures as we go. The amount of devastation is hard to believe. You get used to it, really quickly, desensitized. You expect that homes will be empty and that resaurants and stores will be boarded up. It's not hard to find a fast food joint, but finding an open one is a different story.
