Julia's Bloglet

Today I have spam from Vapors Heavier, Archelaus Whang, and Uranus Bickerstaff, but the most haunting spam I have ever received, the one which I haven't deleted for several days now for some reason is this:

From: Something

Subject: Delivers Intensity Despair

First line (visible from inbox): Invisible everyday electrons...

It feels like the start of a modern Lovecraftian horror story. If I succumb to terrifying madness soon, you'll know why. _

That last picture is of Gatorade. I had to clean out the trunk of the car, which had the big canister there in case of emergency. I had to clean it out so that we could have more room to load stuff in when we helped Moss's mother move. I was on a tight schedule because I was also supposed to go buy a dress for my grandfather's memorial service and then go to a graduation party for one of Moss's hgh school friends before going to Moss's mother's that night, helping her move all day Saturday, driving home saturday very late, and then getting up Sunday, packing and going to Southern California for a week. I kept trying to clean out the car, but the phone kept ringing and I kept answering it, thinking it would be something important, but I kept having conversations like this:

Me: Hello?

Madre: I have an emergency!

Me: What is it!?

Madre: It's a Costco emergency!

Me: What??

Madre: Well [German Foreign Exchange Student] wants seasons 1-5 of the Gilmore Girls on dvd, but my Costco doesn't have them!

Me: I REALLY have to go. I'm sorry.

Anyway, I eventually did get the car cleaned out and vacuumed up the Gatorade and all, but at the moment when it spilled I realized that I must be starring in a comedy where all the jokes are about the protagonist having a really bad day.

In case you're wondering, I did not find a dress (have to do that today before the airport, the graduation party was fun, and although it was a very stressful day and I seem to have pulled a muscle in my left arm, Moss's mother's move went fairly well. We got home around 2 a.m. and I managed to get 8 hours of sleep. Now I am trying to wake up so that I can pack and go dress shopping again. Plane takes off at 5.

What have you been up to? Have any comically bad days recently? Or ever? _

Exciting discovery!

So, when I was little (say 7 or 8) there was this animated movie I really loved about a girl and a war and a prophecy. It was on a cable movie channel right when we first got cable, and I tried to watch it whenever I could, but most of the time I only got to see the beginning or part of the middle before I was called away from the television. I must have watched pieces of it five or six times before I finally saw the end one day and found out what the prophecy (which had to do with the girl wearing a blue dress and walking across a field of gold) meant, and I can't even tell you how excited I was to know how it came out.

After that it went away from cable tv and I never heard of it again. I tried to find it via web search engines when I first had internet access, but I couldn't find anything. At one point I remembered that the title was Warriors of the Wind, but that still didn't bring anything up, or maybe it brought up a link to a rare vhs or betamax copy that had already been sold? I can't remember. All I remember was that I didn't have much luck and I never found anyone else who had heard of it. So I gave up.

A few years later I started hearing people rave about Miyazaki films (Tim asked me on more than one occasion if I had ever seen Nausicaa and Porco Rosso and I said no), and I thought idly that maybe I should watch one, but I never did until last year when Moss and I rented Kiki's Delivery Service and saw Howl's Moving Castle in the theatre (or maybe it was the other way around, I can't remember). I concluded that everyone was onto something with the raving and also that the style reminded me of a few things I'd seen when I was younger; cartoon series of Heidi and Little Women, which I'd seen on the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon back in 1986. So I looked up Miyazaki's history and found that yes! the Heidi and Little Women cartoons were his! But I didn't see any mention of a movie called Warriors of the Wind, so I assumed that it must have been an American knockoff of anime style and that it probably didn't hold up very well, which must be why it disappeared.

So, tonight we finally got around to watching Castle in the Sky, and it really reminded me strongly of Warriors of the Wind, which I knew wasn't a Miyazaki Movie, but which I thought maybe I would just try looking for again, this time on IMDB, just to see if anything came up...

So.

I type in "Warriors of the Wind" and up comes... Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind! All this time, and I had no idea! I don't know how I missed it, but now I am really excited and want to see it again. Apparently the version I saw was heavily edited and Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli didn't approve (and they changed the girl's name to Princess Zandra, which explains why I never recognized the name Nausicaa). This is so exciting! I have been curious about this movie for years and years! Also, I like to see that my taste as a small child was apparently somewhat good.

So, that's pretty much it. I just got so excited that I had to write it all down. Have you ever made a similar exciting discovery about something you loved as a child? _

We saw my sister's two person band (pictured below) this afternoon. They're good, and they have the potential to be even better. Both of them are Johnnies, which sort of comes as no great surprise when when they gush about their new song : a letter from a jealous and mentally unstable Johannes Kepler to Tycho Brahe (apparently they recently read a book with compelling evidence that Kepler killed Brahe via mercury poisoning). They were originally planning to record an EP during the last two weeks, but have instead decided to wait a year in order to practice more. This is a good plan I think, but unfortunately it means that you can't hear them yet.

As far as improvements go, one major thing is my sister (in the bird sweater) being somewhat self concious on stage. She has a great voice and a lot of charisma if she lets herself go with it, but a lot of the time she'll catch herself at it and suddenly sing quietly and look down and blush a bit. I expect that's easily fixed with more experience and confidence in their songs, though. her bandmate seems much more comfortable in the performing bit, but then she has more experience playing music and a nice big guitar to hide behind, which helps I bet. I think eventually my sister is meant to play guitar, but she's still in the learning stages. The terribly frustrating thing is that although they sometimes do really funny/cute things, the second they notice a camera they stop, so I could never get a very good picture. _
