The OED's word of the day today was "mamelon".

French "mamelon", rounded hill (1797; c1560 in Middle French in sense "nipple")

[...]

1947 W. H. AUDEN in Amer. Scholar Autumn 404 Do they sponsor In us the mornes and motted mammelons?

So that's that taken care of. When do we get "ravelin"? _

"No."

"Conductor? Scholar? Composer? Player? Bach freak?"

"Bach freak."

Currently, the top result for "beautiful" in a Google image search is a giant extinct armadillo.

Edit: Realized I had "grayscale only" turned on. Still and all. _

Ooh! This is tonight, and it looks pretty great. Gotta ask the girl. Bit of a funny thing -- when I first saw her on Queer Opera Punks and checked out her userinfo and interests (her LJ was friends-locked), I somehow conceived the notion that she was a haughty, glamorous historical costume designer specializing in the Weimar era. Then we started talking, and I realized she was just a Monty Python-quoting dork like the rest of us (thank god). So maybe this'll be a chance for her to explore her alternate-dimension persona whilst shaking booty -- always a good combination, if you ask me. _

Just discovered a fabulous word over at Verlaine's:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
It's from Aristophanes' Ecclesiazusae, and means:

Oyster-saltfish-skate-sharkhead-leftover-vinegar-dressing-
laserpitium-leek-with-honey-sauce-thrush-blackbird-pigeon-
dove-roasted-cockbrain-wagtail-cushat-hare-boiled-in-new-wine-

Apologies to LJ readers for the sudden backwash; my RSS hasn't been working properly for the last week, and now that it's fixed, everything blurts up at once.

Also, I think I might go to this tonight. Never mind. Misread the date on the poster. _

My girl is back, Martin has come and gone (It was so great, though. I got vast gobs of his music, we played Word Thief and he kicked my ass, we watched the new Dr. Who and he admitted its startling worthiness, we went to the Cloisters, we read each other's fortunes, we talked about Fear Sweeney and its sequel, he initiated me into the delicious sin that is ordering food online, we walked and walked and talked and talked and saw many weird and wondrous things), and I'm happy. No work today. I start at the new place next Monday. I've been living. _

Today I turned in a letter of resignation to my boss, signed up for evening classes at NYCI (Though, damnit, I wish they were still called Stenotype Academy. Awesome name. "Career Institute" is just so beige.), applied for a Federal loan, told Hunter I wouldn't be joining 'em in the fall, ate two slices of free pizza, and picked up my penultimate paycheck. I feel... efficient. _

I just spent the last eight hours typing up interviews with contestants for the Miss Minnesota and Miss Georgia pageants. I now present you with the highlights.

--

Girl 1: What's a good motto? Mm-hm. Let's get something... I want something catchy. One girl said, um, my sister queen, they said, you know, "Give us your life motto." She said, "Don't sweat the small stuff, and don't pet the sweat stuff."

--

Girl 1: Showercap? Didn't pack one of them. Actually, I packed six, and I was like, "Oh, I've already packed six." So I took six out.

--

Girl 2: I got me one of those at Miss Teen Georgia, and I love it. Because it's so cute and dainty.
Girl 1: And it's little.
Girl 2: That's what "dainty" means.
Girl 1: No, but it's little!

--

Girl 3: I'm a very strong person. I'm very convicted.

--

Girl 3: I see that my skin isn't perfect, that I have fat eyelids. And there's just so many things I see that others don't.

--

Girl 3: I'm a bit overwhelmed at all the current events. It seems like every day there's something new in the news.

--

Interviewer: What is your worst attribute, and would you reveal it to the judges? And will you?

Girl 3: My wors... what's an attribute? _

I need to read C. J. Cherryh. I like her songs (I've had "40,000 in Gehenna" stuck in my head all day). I like what she has to say about Rome. It makes me happy that she put Miscon on her Favorite Cons list -- twice! I met her at it last year, and was a little intimidated, but enjoyed filking with her. I need to read her novels. Guess I'll borrow K.'s copy of Cyteen and go from there. _
