Bloglet, the gentleman's mock turtle soup --
Moss made it sweeter than myrrh ash and dhoup

Without a word of warning or explanation, my mother has apparently decided to speak to me in nothing but Norwegian from here on out. She's been doing it since about 10:00 last night. I'm kinda digging it, actually. _

Oof. The internet. I was trying to find an amusing picture for Syttende Mai (Norwegian Independence Day), but when I typed "17 Mai" into Google Image Search, I saw a horrifying picture of a little boy with some sort of terrible skin disease. I followed the link, of course, because that's what I do, and found out about Buruli ulcer, a mycobacterial infection related to tuberculosis and leprosy that's become increasingly prevalent in tropical countries over the last few decades. Half an hour, two PDFs, and an indescribably graphic Powerpoint presentation later, I'm fascinated. The disease, though disfiguring and debilitating, is, almost incomprehensibly, mostly painless. There's been little success in curing it with antibiotics, but encouraging, even amazing, results with poultices of clay and shea butter. And, most heartening (and unexpected) of all -- work is being done on the disease at the controversial Rocky Mountain Laboratory, right down the road in Hamilton. I'm so proud of them. They've been working tirelessly for years to get Biosafety Level Four containment, against all the fear and ignorance of the public -- holding endless meetings and handholding sessions, and showing extraordinary dedication and patience. And it looks as if they might finally be making progress. I could go into a rant about the short-sightedness and selfishness of the Not In My Backyard contingent, but instead I'll just rejoice in the courage of the scientists who devote themselves to this nightmarish but vital work. Happy 17th of May to them! And the same to any Norwegians you chance to meet. _

Spoke too soon. "Today" ain't sufficient. How about every time I get the urge to blog a "whee!" or a "woo!" or an "aww!" or anything along that nauseating line, I swap it for actual content from days past? Like, this time, f'rinstance: Mark Twain and Sholem Aleichem. _
