I wanted to hit Peter from the minute he said that Edmund's betrayal was his fault really. Also, I felt a temptation to blame the CGI monsters for the lack of drama, but then there is Lord of the Rings, so. The book had slightly more emotional impact for me. But only slightly.

I saw a cat on a leash today. It seemed happy enough. I didn't want to stare.
Also, got completely soaked. Hit by a squall. I like the word squall. And it's sunny again. Bah.

There's a rumor that Apple might abandon OS X and switch to Windows. That would be very strange. Not that I'm thrilled with OS X mind you. It runs like molasses on my machine. Though the unix tools are nice.
It would make sense of why the latest Java release isn't supported, which I thought was weird.

Women in Computer Science lunch today. Not sure how I feel about such things. The talk was mostly, so how do we get more women undergrads to choose CS as a major? Well maybe let's have some tutoring or mentoring program. But then, ok, so do we limit that to women? Because that's unfair and looks like we think women need more help. But if we don't, will we be advancing our cause any?
It's a hard problem. I'm not one of the ones who thinks that, well, ok, if women aren't interested they aren't interested and that's that. I would never have thought I could do computer science if it hadn't been for a summer internship and, oddly enough, a stint with Habitat for Humanity, which got me to see that I could do stuff regardless of my gender, and that building stuff was fun. I don't know how to give other people that experience. Maybe make them all go do Habitat, I don't know.
But people like their stereotypes, they like looking into the crystal ball of gender and asking it who they should be, and while it's easy to allow people to make whatever choices they want, it's nearly impossible to get them to see they might want something other than what they are supposed to want.

I saw one of those in-the-subway-tunnel ads today, for Hummers of all things. I would have thought that T riders and Hummer drivers would be almost disjoint sets. (Edit: gratuitous use of the word "like" removed)

I'm liking this whole January thaw thing. Went for a long walk around Fresh Pond, which I'd never done before. It's a reservoir so it's got chain link fence all around it. Very urban. Hordes of dogs. Also joggers, all with their iPods. I always wonder what people have on their iPods. On mine today I went through my grunge/metal/industrial/etc. collection. The only metal I still seem to like is Carcass. Some good stuff on the grunge/industrial/etc. side of things, though.

"It is not true, as many in the Arab world believe, that the United States has embarked on a reckless campaign of torture and abuse of its Arab prisoners of war. But what has happened-- a slow slide from coherent, consistent standards for interrogation and treatment of prisoners to a sometimes ad-hoc, occasionally brutal search for information at all costs-- should warrant public outcry. That it has not suggests either that this shift doesn't interest us because it affects outsiders, or that we no longer consider torture or near-torture to be beyond the bounds of civil conduct."
Ok, so where do I sign up for public outcry?

I used to think my parents were silly for having seven types of tea (mostly herbal). We now have:
1. A large quantity of Salada, referred to as "bag tea"
2. An excellent Assam from a nice tea shop
3. An ok green jasmine from same tea shop
4. Twinings black jasmine
5. Decaf earl grey
6. Tazo chai
7. Mandarin orange spice
8. China green
9. A rather stale oolong with amusing translated-from-Chinese instructions ("it is advisable that the boding water be added three times")
There is a good reason for each of them. Really.
