Certain people (Ezra Pound comes to mind) show some degree of genius by being, alternately, brilliantly insightful, and horribly, maddeningly wrong. Camille Paglia resembles these people, but on a smaller scale: she says things that are either too obvious to bother stating, or too stupid to bother refuting. _

Well, I still have some doubts about Salon--it doesn't seem quite good enough to read regularly--but I'll admit they have correctly identified the key question to ask about the Oscars this year, namely (I paraphrase, of course) "Why the hell does Gladiator have a chance of winning anything when it was fundamentally crap?" _

Argh! The March 19th build of Mozilla, was beautiful--it was clean, it was fast, it finally felt like a real browser--except for one major user interface glitch that was so bad I couldn't use it. The March 21st build fixes that glitch, but it's back to being slow and only semi-reliable. I mean, the future looks promising and all, Mozilla's finally being optimized, there really is hope, sure, but at the present it's very frustrating. _

Or in a youth hostel--everyone's travelling through anyway, so people can't go around expecting only to talk to people they already know, and besides, they've got a fair bit in common just by being there. _

I think one thing I like about the web--which it has in common with other things I like--is that on the web it seems perfectly natural to start conversations with random people you've never seen before. Renaissance faires share this quality. So does St. John's (as, I suspect, do many colleges). BBSes (when they were still around) shared this quality. You can do it out in the real world, too--just start talking to people, without any introductions or anything, and get into a long conversation about something--but it's not considered the most obvious thing to do, it's not just standard operating procedure. There's not enough shared background for it to work without formalities. Shared background counts for a lot with these things. _

You'd think that, wouldn't you? But it's not true at all--sure, there are low-energy-consumption things you can do at a computer for hours at a time, and sitting at a computer doesn't make them any harder, but if you're doing really strenuous mental work it can be really exhausting, despite the lack of any physical labour. It really was astonishing to me how exhausted I was after my first real 8 hour bout of serious programming (not just coding things out, or cleaning things up, but actually programming for a solid block of time). It leaves you tired, and hungry, just like other work. (Oh... and the newly restored non-red background is wonderful.)

Now where's that dratted list?
Golly! Not only that, but almost two weeks past, and me scarce having noticed. Well then, time for another round:

Happy twelve-days-after-your-birthday to you,
Happy twelve-days-after-your-birthday dear Katherine,
Happy twelve-days-after-your-birthday to you.

I hope you quite enjoy being able to... um... vote. (Wow... requiring purity really does shorten the list somewhat... but I'm at least confident that you'll be able to savor voting properly.)

But if break is over, and people are moving back on campus, that should at least mean that they'll update their bloglets a bit more often. As for this business of who's logged in the most, my only question is how Elise and Wiz got to keep their accounts. Hmmph. (Okay, Elise I suppose makes sense, what with working at the college bookstore and all. Assuming she does still work at the college bookstore. Elise, do you read this? Do you still work at the college bookstore?)

Does object oriented program represent more of a Platonic or an Aristotelian view of the world? Does it matter what language you're using? Maybe inheritance of interfaces is Aristotelian, but inheritance of implementations is Platonic.
