Okay, a utility to make windows partially transparent has to count as one of the coolest display hacks I've ever seen, and useful (?) too. Appears to be just for Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Not sure anything like this could be done with X, but Berlin, of course, will support this and more. Anyhow, if you use Windows, grab it at http://www.saberman.com/SetWindow/Index.htm

A word of friendly advice: if you've just moved into a new apartment, and the novelty's starting to wear off, and you're starting to feel kind of lonely, because it is very empty in there, and you don't even have a phone hooked up yet to call any friends with, it might not be best to start listening to Leonard Cohen CDs if what you want to do is to cheer up a bit. (No no, I'm fine, that was Sunday night. Last night I checked out a book on tape from the library.)

Okay, the pattern is something like: 1) I think of something that sounds like a good idea; 2) Anywhere between a week and a year goes by; 3) I see my idea actually being built somewhere. And this happens again and again. Now, normally, it's stuff that basically makes sense... good open-source voice recognition, virtual reality, obvious kinda stuff. And normally it at least waits adecent period of time before happening. But today we have:
Item 1 - Last week (on my bloglet, even), I suggest that, in a sick, demented, nobody-would-ever-actually-do-this-of-course kind of way, caffeinated orange juice would be, shall we say, a good help to the programmer. Turns out that one of my employers actually pitched this idea to Coca-Cola years ago (or something to that effect), which I found out the day after I mentioned it. It had been rejected, of course, but today, what should I find in the deli but Buzz Juice.
Item 2 - Saturday night, as I'm going to sleep, it occurs to me that one good way (or at least, one amusing way) to rate the popularity of something would be to search on altavista for "X sucks" and "X rocks", and compare the number of responses for each. I briefly consider implementing it. But then, by sheer chance, what should I find on the web today but this. And now I'm frightened.

"Ad-hoc polymorphism" is a really lovely phrase. Method overloading, which it refers too, is actually a reasonably lovely concept, too: it means that I can change what a function (method) does depending on what kinds of arguments I give it. If the above remarks don't make it obvious (which I suppose they won't to any non-programmers out there), I've been learning Java lately. It's spiffy.

Go to http://debate.wfu.edu/ and look at the bottom of the page. You can see, there, evidently seriously intended, but by chance far more brilliant than it was intended to be, the following text: "The Candidates: GeorgeWBush.com, AlGore2000.com".

The primary purpose of the DATA statement is to give names to constants; instead of referring to pi as 3.141592653589793 at every appearance, the variable PI can be given that value with a DATA statement and used instead of the longer form of the constant. This also simplifies modifying the program, should the value of pi change.

Loud music and orange juice. When you're programming, there's really no substitute. (Simple, very rhythmic loud music.)

Who was stung on the arm by a wasp.
When asked if it hurt
He replied, "No, it doesn't.
"I'm so glad it wasn't a hornet."
